TheinterfaceidentierofanIPv6hostaddressisbasedontheInstituteofElectricaland
ElectronicsEngineers(IEEE)EUI-64format,whichcreatesalocallyandgloballyunique
64-bitinterfaceidentierbasedontheexistingMACaddresses.
These64-bitinterfaceidentierscanaddressonebyonegloballyandcanuniquelyidentify
theinterfaceofeachnetwork.Thismeansthat,intheory,thereareupto264different
physicalinterfacesandabout1.8x1019differentaddresses,which,however,onlyoccupy
halfoftheIPv6addressspace.Itisenoughintheforeseeablefutureatleast.
TheIPv6unicastaddresscanbeclassiedintothefollowingcategories:
lAggregatableGlobalUnicastAddress
Thisisanotherkindofaggregation,whichisindependentofanInternetService
Provider(ISP).Theprovider-basedaggregatetiveaddressesmustbechangedas
aproviderchanges,whiletheexchange-basedaddressesaredirectlylocatedby
anIPv6switchingentity.Theexchangeprovidesaddressblocks,andusersand
providersconcludecontractsforthenetworkaccess.
Suchnetworkaccessiseitherdirectlyprovidedbyaprovider,orindirectlyprovided
byanexchange.However,theroutingisthroughtheexchange.Inthisway,auser
needsnottoaddressagainwhenitchangesaprovider.Atthesametime,usersare
allowedtousemultipleISPstoprocesssingle-blocknetworkaddress.
Aggregatableglobalunicastaddressesincludealltheaddresseswhosethreestarting
bitsare001,whichcanbeusedasprexesforotherunallocatedunicast.Table2-2
