7.1IS-ISv6Overview
TheIntermediateSystem-to-IntermediateSystem(IS-IS)protocolisaroutingprotocol
developedbytheInternationalOrganizationforStandardization(ISO)forCLNS.Itisa
networklayerprotocoloftheOSIprotocolsuite.IthasbeenexpandedtosupportIP
routingandformanintegratedIS-ISprotocol.TheIS-ISprotocolcurrentlymentioned
referstotheintegratedIS-ISprotocol.
TheIS-ISprotocolisusedasanInteriorGatewayProtocol(IGP)inplentyofnetworks.
ItsoperatingmechanismissimilartothatoftheOSPFprotocol.Itdividesanetworkinto
multipleareas.Theroutersinanareacanmanageonlytheroutinginformationinthearea.
Thissavesroutercostsandthusmakesitsuitableforlarge-andmedium-scalenetworks.
TheIS-ISprotocolalsousesDijkstra'sSPFalgorithmtocomputeroutes.ItusestheSPF
algorithmtoobtaintheoptimalrouteaccordingtothelinkstatusdatabaseandthenadds
theroutetotheIProutingtable.
IS-ISisaroutingprotocolwithhighexpansibility,soitcansupporttheexpansionofthe
CLNSroutingprotocoltosupportIPv4andsupportIPv6.
Uni-topologyIS-IScanonlyrunasingleSPFalgorithm.Thetopologiescorrespondingto
IPv4andIPv6mustbeidenticalandwithspecialrestriction.Whilethemulti-topologyIS-IS
canrunmultipleSPFalgorithms.ThenthetopologiescorrespondingtoIPv4andIPv6may
bedifferentandwithcertainexibility.
RFCdeneshowtouseIS-IStosupportIPv6.ItdenestwonewT ag,Length,Values
(TLVs):IPv6ReachabilityTLVandIPv6InterfaceAddressTLV.
lTheTLVtypevalueoftheIPv6ReachabilityTLVis236(0xEC).ItsTLVeffectsare
equaltothetwoTLVsofIPv4:IPinternallyreachableandIPexternallyreachable.
Up/downandexternalaredenedinthisTLVandareusedtoindicatethatroutesare
redistributedmutuallyintheL2/L1andtodeterminewhetherarouteisanexternal
route.
lTheTLVtypevalueoftheIPv6InterfaceAddressTLVis232(0xE8).ItsTLVeffects
areequaltotheTLVofIPv4:IPportaddress.Thedifferenceisthattheoriginal32-bit
addresssegmentissupersededbythe128-bitaddresssegmentinthenewTLV.
