16.2.1ISATAPTunnelOverview
ISATAPTunnelIntroduction
WiththewideapplicationsofIPv6technology,therearemoreIPv6hostsonthe
currentIPv4network.Intra-SiteAutomaticTunnelAddressingProtocol(ISATAP)tunnel
technologyprovidesagoodsolutionforsuchapplication.ISATAPcanobtainthe
destinationofatunnelautomaticallybyembeddinganIPv4addressinthedestination
addressofanIPv6packet.
WhenanISATAPtunnelisused,thedestinationaddressofanIPv6packetandtheIPv6
addressofatunnelinterfaceshouldusespecialISATAPaddresses.Theformatofan
ISATAPaddressisPrex(64bit):0:5EFE:ip-address.The64-bitprexistheprexofa
legalIPv6unicastaddress,andtheip-addressisa32-bitIPv4sourceaddress(inthe
a.b.c.dformatorabcd:efghformat).ThroughthisembeddedIPv4address,atunnelcan
beestablishedautomaticallytotransmitIPv6packets.ISATAPtunnelsaremainlyusedto
establishconnectionsbetweenIPv6routers,andbetweenIPv6hostsandIPv6routerson
theIPv4network.
ISATAPTunnelWorkFlow
ISATAPencapsulationanddecapsulationaredescribedbelow.
lEncapsulationprinciple:WhenanIPv6issent,theegressisantunnelinterface.The
tunneltypeisdeterminedaccordingtopacketcall-backontheinterface.Ifitisan
ISATAPtunnel,IPv4headerencapsulationisperformed.AnISATAPtunnelfollowsthe
encapsulationformatofa6in4tunnel.TheouterIPv4destinationaddressistheIPv4
addressembeddedinthedestinationaddressoftheIPv6packet,andtheouterIPv4
sourceaddressisthesourceaddressoftheISATAPtunnel.Aftertheencapsulation,
thepacketishandledaccordingtothecommonIPv4packetsendingow.
lDecapsulationprinciple:ThedecapsulationowofanISATAPtunnelisthesameas
thatofa6in4tunnel.WhenanIPv4packetisreceivedandtheprotocolnumberin
theIPv4headeris41,theprotocolnumberprocessingfunctionsregisteredforIPv4
arecalledandthe6in4decapsulationfunctionisused.Thedevicesearchesforthe
matchedtunnelentityaccordingtothesourceaddressanddestinationaddressof
