4.1IPv6StaticRouteOverview
Staticroutesrefertotheroutesthatthenetworkadministratorcreatesbyusing
congurationcommandsintheroutingtable.Staticroutingisdifferentfromdynamic
routingthatcreatesaroutingtableaccordingtoaroutingalgorithm.
Whendynamicroutingisapplied,sometimesitisnecessarytosendtheroutesofthe
entireInternettoarouterandthentheroutercanhardlytoleratesuchahugeload.Inthat
case,staticroutingcanbeappliedtosolvetheproblem.Withstaticrouting,onlyafew
congurationsarerequiredtoeliminatetheuseofdynamicroutes.
Inaroutingenvironmentinvolvingmultipleroutersandmultiplepaths,however,itisrather
complextocongurestaticroutes.
Thestaticunicastroutingtableisconguredbythenetworkadministratoraccordingto
his/herroutingrequirementsafterhe/shegetsfamiliarwiththeentirenetworktopology.
Therefore,thenetworkadministratorcanexactlycontrolroutingbehaviorsinthenetwork.
Whenthenetworktopologychanges,however,thenetworkadministratorneedsto
recongurethestaticroutingtable.
Unlikedynamicroutingprotocols,staticroutingdoesnotrequirethesettingofprotocol
dataontherelatedinterfacesbutrequiresonlyavaliditycheckoftheuser-congured
staticroutingparameterssuchasdestinationaddress,masklength,nexthopandegress
interface.Thevalidityofeachconguredstaticroute,however,stilldependsonthestatus
oftheegressinterface.
4.2ConguringaStaticIPv6Route
ThisproceduredescribeshowtocongureastaticIPv6route.Thenetworkadministrator
conguresstaticroutesmanuallybasedontherouterequirementssothattheroute
behaviorsinthenetworkcanbepreciselycontrolled.
