IPv6TunnelIntroduction
Tunnelingisanencapsulationtechnologyusedtotransmitanothernetworkprotocol
throughtheuseofonenetworkprotocol,thatis,itutilizesonenetworktransferprotocol
toencapsulatethedatapacketsgeneratedbyotherprotocolsintoitsownpacketsbefore
thepacketsaretransmittedinthenetwork.
TheIPv6overIPv4tunnelmechanismisusedtoaddanIPv4headerinthefrontofthe
IPv6datapacketandthentransfertheIPv6packetthroughatunnelsothattheIPv6
packettraversestheIPv4networktoimplementtheinterworkingbetweentwoisolated
IPv6networks,asshowninFigure16-1.

AnIPv6overIPv4tunnelcanbeestablishedbetweentwohosts,betweenahostanda
router,orbetweentworouters.Theterminationpointofthetunnelmaybetheultimate
destinationoftheIPv6packet,orthepacketmaystillneedtobefurtherforwarded.
Therefore,tunnelsareclassiedintoconguredtunnelsandautomatictunnelsbasedon
thewaystoobtainthedestinationIPv4addressofatunnel.
