Preparing for Measurements
(1) Apparatus for applying samples
Plastic spoon (included; for non-viscous samples, such as juices)
Plastic pick with round tip (for stirring viscous samples)
Polyethylene pipettes, etc.
Do not use glass, metal, or magnetic apparatus for applying samples as they may
scratch the prism.
Do not re-use a pipette for applying different samples. Any residue of the previous
sample inside a pipette will be mixed with the next sample, impairing accuracy.
(2) Rinsing cup with nozzle
Have water ready in a cup with a nozzle for cleaning the prism surface and applying a few drops of water to
be measured.
(3) Apparatus for cleaning off samples
Soft tissue paper
Ethyl alcohol or diluted alkaline detergent (Apply either one to tissue paper for cleaning polymer and
oily samples.)
Wipe thoroughly with water and tissue after cleaning to make sure that no alkaline
detergent is left on the prism area.
