Chapter 12
Files attributes management (ACL)
NOTE : The operations described in this chapter are for system administrators and advan-
ced users, and only concern secured machines running a Microsoft Windows NT or more
advanced operating system. There are no changes required for secure machines based on
another platform.
REMARK : For more information on ACLs, go to the following link :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_Control_List.
The Data Safe Restore solution by default does not save the ACLs of the files on
Microsoft Windows operating systems. If you want to maintain your security strategy on the files backed up by the
Beemo appliance, you can enable the backup of these rights by carrying out the following operations :
1. Log on as an administrator to the machine whose user access rights you want to back up.
2. Stop the application (or the service if you have followed the recommendations of Beemo Technologie) Data
Safe Restore Client.
3. In the Microsoft Windows file explorer, go to the
conf subdirectory of the
Data Safe Restore Clientinstallation folder.
4. Using the editor of your choice, add the line
acl=1 to the end of the file config located in the conf subdirec-
tory.
NOTE : You are advised to make a backup copy of the original config file to prevent the
backup from stopping to work in case of an error while editing the file.
5. Once you have edited the file, restart the application or service Data Safe Restore Client. The files saved on
this machine now include the ACLs in their attributes.
REMARK : The implementation of ACL management significantly slows down the backup
process, due to the increase in disk access operations for file security rights.
Once these changes are made, the steps to be followed to secure and restore the machine data are identical to those
of a traditional backup. The restored files will have the rights defined for them at the time the machine was backed
up, to which will be added the rights inherited from the directory to which they are restored.
