Chapter 10
Backing up Microsoft Exchange
10.1 Foreword
NOTE : You must first have installed the Beemo appliance in line with the instructions
given previously. The operations described in this chapter are for system administrators
and advanced users with a good knowledge of Microsoft tools (in particular NTBackup,
Active Directory and Exchange Server).
The Exchange plugin from the Beemo appliance offers three different levels of backup for Microsoft Exchange
Server :
Full (Windows 2003) or Database (Windows 2008 and upper)
Mailboxes
Sheet by sheet
"Full" mode in Windows 2003 allows a full backup of the Exchange server and hence the possibility of a full
restore.
This mode is based on the use of Microsoft NTBackup. So it is the backup client installed on the server that
automatically calls up NTBackup to carry out the backup in "Full" mode. In this case, NTBackup will generate a
backup of the Exchange database at the request of the client. This backup is temporarily stored on the server itself
in the folder where the backup client has been installed. On installing the backup client it is important to carefully
select the target disk so as to have sufficient space for this temporary backup. The file generated will then be
saved on the
Beemo appliance then deleted from the server disk.
"Database" mode in Windows 2008/2012 also enables a full backup of the Exchange server and hence the
possibility of a full restore.
Unlike "Full" mode in Windows 2003, the backup client directly performs a backup of the Exchange databases and
related transaction logs. After a backup in this mode, transaction logs are automatically reset.
"Mailbox" mode enables users’ mailboxes to be backed up individually in the form of "Personal folder" type files
with the extension ”.pst”.
Once restored, it is possible to use those files with Microsoft Outlook or manually integrate them into the Exchange
database. The backup method in "Mailbox" mode differs depending on the version of Windows server being used
(use of the exmerge Microsoft utility or Powershell script).
"Sheet by sheet" mode enables all or some of the items contained in mailbox databases and public folder
databases to be backed up item by item. Thus, it is possible to back up and restore each item selected directly in
the Exchange databases. To do this, you can browse the full tree structure of mailbox databases and public folder
databases right down to the last item (email, contact, appointment, etc.).
10.2 Requirements and limitations
The Data Safe Restore service must work with a user account from the domain that is a member of the domain
admin’ group.
The user account must have an email address to back up public folders in sheet by sheet mode.
