Table 8: Questions to be asked if having communication issues
Item
Question

Comments
1) Check the connections for
the white and blue wires
___ Yes
___ No
Network controller – White wire is connected to pin 2 and the blue wire
is connected to pin 3. The shield is connected to pin 1.
Control White wire is connected to pin 2 and the blue wire is con-
nected to pin 3. The shield is connected pin 1.
2) Has the minus (black) lead
on all 24 volt power supplies
been connected to earth
ground?
___ Yes
___ No
3) Has the termination resis-
tor been installed at the last
device at each end of the
communication cable?
___ Yes
___ No
4) Part number of communica-
tion cable.
The communication cable should be the cable recommended by
BouMatic.
5) Is the communication cable
connected in a daisy chain
style?
___ Yes
___ No
6) What is the DC voltage
across the blue and white
wires of the communication
cable?
There should not be communications during this measurement.
The normal voltage should be less than 0.020 volts DC. If the voltage is
greater than 0.40 volts DC there is a control that is trying communicate
continuously.
7) Has the addresses been set
for both the TouchPoint and
SmartControl?
___ Yes
___ No
8) Are there controls of the
same type with the same
address?
___ Yes
___ No
If an address query comes back with a missing address it could mean
that two controls have the same address.
9) Does an address query re-
turn all the addresses of
that device type in the re-
sponding column?
___ Yes
___ No
If one control does not communicate check the blue and white wires for
reversed connection or no connection.
If a group of all controls do not communicate check the blue and white
wires for a reversed connection or no connection.
10) Not all of the expected data
is being collected or not
all controls functioning the
same.
Verify that all controls have the latest software version.
11) Communication to all con-
trols worked at one time but
has stopped.
___ Yes
___ No
Check for:
Is 24 volts turned on to all controls.
Check the communication cable for physical damage that could create
opens or shorts.
12) Controls do not go into the
Wash mode.
___ Yes
___ No
Check for correcting addressing of each zone.
13) Poor communication from
SmartDairy™ Controller to
TouchPoint and/or Smart-
Control.
___ Yes
___ No
Termination resistors are not installed or too many are installed.
With DC power off to all controls measure the DC resistance from the
blue to white wires of the communication cable.
If the resistance = 120 ohms or greater you are missing one or both
termination resistors. Check both ends of the communication cable for
termination resistors.
If the resistance = 60 ohms the correct number of termination resistors
are installed.
If the resistance = 40 ohms too many termination resistors are in-
stalled. You need to remove the one that is not at the end of the com-
munication cable.
