6.1.3 Ambient Temperature Implications on Battery
1. Battery range decreases as ambient temperature decreases. This can affect the range by up to
30%.
2. Batteries discharge when left uncharged. They can discharge up to 5% per month (higher rates
in warmer climates) with the key off and much faster if the key is left on.
6.1.4 Battery Operating Temperature
The vehicle will not operate if one or more batteries has an internal temperature below -4° F (-20° C).
When not in use, park the vehicle and connect the battery charger. See page 44. When the vehicle is
connected to the charger, battery is maintained at full performance operating temperature in addition
to receiving a full charge.
If the vehicle is not connected to the charger while parked in cold weather, battery temperatures may
drop below -4° F (-20° C). If this occurs, connect the vehicle to the charger will activate the battery
heaters first to increase battery temperature and not start charging until the battery temperature is
more than 41° F (5° C). When battery gets extremely cold, battery temperature will increase by
approximately 17°-27° F (10°-15° C) per hour while charging.
NOTE
The vehicle may require up to 45 minutes of charging for the batteries to reach operating
temperature, depending on their current internal temperature. It may take additional time for
the batteries to reach a 100% state of charge (SOC).
6.1.5 Charger Operation
Putting the charger in a dry and ventilated environment quickly charges the charger quickly.
Operating and Charging Performance
Condition
Battery
Temperature
Description
Low Te mperature
Operation
Below
-4° F (-20° C)
The vehicle will not operate.
32° to -4° F
(0° to-20° C)
The vehicle will operate. Vehicle performance may be diminished
until a higher temperature is reached.
Low Temperature
Charging
Below
41° F (5° C)
The modules must first warm the batteries. During this warming
process, the charger will not charges. Full rate charging occurs
when battery temperature reaches 41° F (5° C).
High Temperature
Operation
32° to 120° F
(0° to 50° C)
With an adequate SOC, the vehicle will operate at full
performance.
120° to 140° F
(50° to 60° C)
With an adequate SOC, the vehicle will operate at reduced
performance.
Above
140° F (60° C)
The vehicle will not operate.
High Temperature
Charging
41° to 11 F
(5° to 45° C)
The charger will charge battery at the full charging rate.
11 to 12 F
(45° to 50° C)
The charger will charge at a reduced charging rate, only at the
50% charging rate.
Above
120° F (50° C)
The charger will not work.
