Oxidation
The sample is combined with carrier gas and sodium persulfate. These
additions promote oxidation in the UV reactor. The reactor converts the
carbon in the sample to CO
2
. The CO
2
is again removed from the sample at
the GLS and is routed to the IR detector.
Measurement
The IR detector measures the CO
2
. The CO
2
concentration is proportional to
the carbon concentration in the sample.
1.5 Installation
The analyzer is easily installed by users familiar with water analysis
instruments. Complete installation instructions are in Section 2 on page 27.
A discussion of safety precautions for handling electrical connections, carrier
gas, and chemical solutions is in Safety Precautions on page 7. Please read
and understand Section 2 and Safety Precautions on page 7 before installing
the analyzer.
1.6 Start-up and Operation
The procedure for starting up and operating the system is in Section 4 on
page 55. Analyzer operation is covered in Section 5 on page 63.
1.7 Calibration
Section 6.10 on page 96, has procedures for calibrating the system in Auto or
Manual modes. Accurate calibration allows the instrument to respond over a
wide analysis range. A description of how to make calibration standards can
be found in Section 3 on page 49.
1.8 Miscellaneous
Section 3 on page 49, presents methods for preparing reagents and
calibration standards.
A discussion of safety precautions for handling carrier gas and chemical
solutions is in Safety Precautions on page 7.
Section 8 on page 129, contains information on how to interpret and
correct malfunctions.
Appendix C on page 161, contains a list of abbreviations, acronyms and
definitions used in this manual.
Appendix D on page 165, contains a listing of consumables, accessories,
spare parts, chemicals, electrical, electronic and mechanical
components, and major hardware items.
