5.2.2. Installing the microphone
The microphone must be positioned underneath the mill at the point of impact of the balls,
approximately 10 cm from the mill, in order to get the best signal reception and to reduce the
influence of any other mills, when they are all installed in the same room.
The point of impact is situated approximately at the “4 o’clock” position (120° to 140°).
In the longitudinal direction, the area to be monitored is approximately 1 to 1.5 m from the
diaphragm or at 2/3 of the first chamber.
Figure 10: Location of the microphone
The microphone is fitted with a mounting bracket with two holes (diameter 13 mm) spaced 120 mm apart. It
must be mounted on a rigid support. The microphone head can be adjusted through 360°. A vertical or
horizontal support can be used.
Figure 11: Overall dimensions of the microphone
The microphone must be fixed to a solid support, as any accidental movement could cause irreparable
damage.
It is recommended to first set up the microphone on a temporary support, in order to find the place where
the strongest signal is obtained.
Due to expansion, the final position of the microphone should only be adjusted after the mill has
been in operation for several hours.
The position of the microphone must be checked and if necessary, corrected in the following cases:
For the first time, after the machine has been in operation for about 3 months, when the grinding
balls have stabilised and the mill is working at its maximum load.
After any major change to the grinding balls.
At least once a year.
