MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS
The LeeBoy L300 and L600 Tack Distributors are used
to transport and apply hot, bituminous emulsied asphalt
(sealant) to road and other pavement surfaces. The
operator sprays this “tack coat” using the hand-held
spray wand or 8-foot spray bar (if equipped with this
option).
Use only emulsied asphalts in the
L300 and L600 distributors. NEVER use cutback
asphalt or asphalt cements in the tack distributor:
Emulsion asphalt is the binder of choice, particularly
in the U.S. Emulsions are typically a thick, brown liquid
when initially applied. When the asphalt cements starts
to adhere to the surrounding material, the color changes
to black. As water evaporates, the emulsion behaves
more like pure asphalt cement.
Using water-based asphalt emulsions
that are more environmentally-friendly and reduce
risk of re or explosion is highly recommended.
The information provided in this section is based
upon industry standards. (See Table 4-2, Asphalt
Temperature Guide, on Page 4-12) Seek advice
from your material manufacturer or supplier about
the product best suited for your construction job. For
more information about selecting, storing and handling
liquid asphalt, see the “MS-19 Basic Asphalt Emulsion
Manual” available from the Asphalt Institute at www.
asphaltinstitute.org.
ALWAYS wear protective gloves and
other protective gear for face, feet and body when
working with hot material. If hot asphalt touches
skin, ush area immediately with cold water. DO NOT
apply ice directly to the affected area. Get medical
attention promptly.
DO NOT use the distributor to
spray calcium chloride or other de-icing liquids as
these materials will corrode the pump valves and
contaminate asphalt material. NEVER spray “slurry”
as these materials contain sand and will destroy
components.
Emulsied asphalt is produced by combining asphalt
cements with water and an emulsier. Emulsions are
used because they reduce asphalt viscosity for lower
temperature uses. Application temperatures range from
120° - 160° F (48.9° - 71.1° C) (See Table 4-2, Asphalt
Temperature Guide, on Page 4-12)

Before switching off the engine
following a low-load operation, briey operate it at a
considerably higher load.
1. Turn the starting key to the OFF (O) position.
2. Turn ush valve lever to the OFF position.
3. Remove the starting key.
4. Seal the ignition lock with its protector cap.
