ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Engine maintenance is critical for maximizing safe and
efcient operation. Inspect the engine routinely and
perform the maintenance procedures at the appropriate
intervals to enjoy years of trouble-free operation. (Refer
to your Engine Operator’s Manual for more detailed
information regarding engine-related maintenance
procedures.)
Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service
life of all engines. Use a 4-stroke automotive detergent
oil that meets or exceeds the API service classication
SJ or later (or equivalent).
NOTE: Dispose of used oil in accordance with local
and government environmental requirements, i.e.,
recycling center or service station facility.
Running the engine when the oil level
is too low will damage the engine. DO NOT change
the engine lubrication oil while the engine is running
as serious damage or engine failure can occur.
Stop the engine before checking
the engine lubrication oil level as hot oil can cause
serious burns.

The engine lubrication oil must be kept at a level above
the ADD mark, but not above the FULL mark, on the
engine lubrication oil dipstick. The dipstick is located
under the oil ller cap. (Figures 5-1 and 5-2)
Wait ve minutes after engine
shutdown before removing the dipstick from the
engine and checking the oil level to assure accuracy.
This also prevents lling the engine with too much
lubrication oil. Engine oil should be warm when
checked.
