EXAMPLE 6 - TRIPPER MEASUREMENT
This mode of operation is commonly used for long range Equipment Position Monitoring. Operation is similar
to Space Measurement operation with the exception that 2 transducers (of the same type) are used to make
one measurement.
Tripper operation doubles the individual transducer maximum measurement range.
e.g. 2 XPS-15’s can measure up to 30 m (100 ft); 2 XLS-60’s can measure up to 120 m (400 ft).
(The transducers Nearest Distance (see Transducer Mounting) is not affected).
For this example we’ll assume the following:
» Transducer 1 (an XLS-60) is mounted horizontally
1
on the Tripper Car facing the end of the gallery.
» Transducer 2
2
is mounted at the end of the gallery, directly in line with (facing) Transducer 1.
» a TS-3 is mounted near Transducer 2 and connected to the Temp Sensor 1 terminals.
» when the Tripper Car is at the far end stop, the Transducer 1 to Transducer 2 distance is 325 ft.
» when the tripper car is at the near end stop, the Transducer 1 to Transducer 2 distance is 50 ft.
» a mA output proportional to Tripper Car distance from the near stop is required for PLC operation.
» the Tripper Car travels at 7 ft/min, and is normally no closer than 14 ft from either end stop.
» if the PLC reads 3.8 mA, the Tripper Car is immediately stopped.
1
When XLS (or XLT) series transducers are mounted horizontally, install a support plate under the
transducers to prevent possible mounting / conduit connection damage.
2
This is the only DPL+ operation where the transducers must be the same type.
