Console Basics
With AWS V5 software, δ-Control is now the default automation option. The original timecode-based automation system
is still included and can be re-enabled via the Misc / Setup menu, if required – but note that the console will require a
restart. AFADA automation, although still supported, is unlikely to be used given the additional flexibility offered by δ-
Control. Existing AFADA mixes can easily be converted into δ-Control data – see Appendix 1 for additional information.
As with the original SSL automation system, the channel fader Status keys and fader touch-sense still activate the Pro Tools
Automation Write function via the plug-in, with the red and green Status LEDs indicating whether the main Volume
(absolute) or Trim automation playlists are in Write mode.
When the SSL / Auto menu has been selected on the small screen
softkeys, the actual fader levels are displayed on the channel TFT screen
as continuous bars to the left of the level meters. VCA and Master faders
are displayed as before on the small screen in the centre section above
the softkey labels.
The small screen Console / Auto menu contains the user controls for
the δ-Control mix system as well as a large MIDI timecode display. This
can be enabled or disabled from the Misc / Setup menu and receives
MTC and MMC messages via ipMIDI channel 7.
Two of the four large keys below the screen are used to enable automation and to preselect the New Mix mode. The
other two large keys activate the JOIN and REVISE functions when available.
A further five keys in the lower row of the 8x8 soft key matrix select the various automation mode functions. Most of these
replicate the standard SSL mix system functionality from the original timecode based system, such as SNAP, TRIM and
MOTORS OFF.
