Connecting the Printer 41
Chapter 10 – Connecting the printer to your PC
CAUTION! The network interface does not require sophisticated networking
skills to establish if the following procedures are followed.
However, failure to follow these directions can (and usually does)
make the network connection process very difficult. Please follow
the instructions provided below precisely.
10.1 Interface Overview
The preferred method of installing the 3Z series printers is with an Ethernet network
connection. This allows for the seamless transfer of job files to the machine from the user’s PC
via the 3Z Works model processing software. There are several different network connection
options, which are discussed below.
In addition, if the 3Z series printer is connected to an internet enabled network, several
other benefits become available. First, the 3Z series printer can broadcast status and usage
information to our secure server. This will allow for faster and easier access to information that
can help diagnose and correct problems that may occur on your 3Z series printer. Note that
Solidscape cannot directly access your 3Z series printer, thus reducing any concerns about
privacy.
Having your 3Z series printer connected to the internet will also help us to keep you
current with software updates. This will help ensure that you are always running the most
current version of the 3Z Touch software on your printer, helping you produce the best possible
quality models.
There are three basic methods of connecting your 3Z series printer to a network, wired
through a router or hub, direct wired peer-to-peer, and wireless. Each of these methods is
discussed in detail below.
10.2 Wired Connection via DHCP
This is the most common and easiest way to connect your 3Z Series printer to a
network. The 3Z Series printer’s ship from the factory with the network default set to use DHCP.
You will need a standard Cat5e network cable to make the network connection. See Figure 10-1
Insert one end of the network cable into the network connection port on the rear of the
3Z Series printer. The other end of the network cable should be inserted into an available port
on the network router, hub, or switch. In this configuration, the router acts as a DHCP server,
automatically assigning an IP address to the 3Z Series printer.
If you are on a company network, or connect to the internet through a router on the
network, you likely have a DHCP server available.
Your 3Z Series printer is now connected to your network.
