OSPFv3Introduction
OpenShortestPathFirst(OSPF)version2isalink-status-basedinteriorgatewayprotocol
developedbyIETF .Becauseithasawideapplicationscope,providesfastconvergence,
eliminatesroutingloopsandfacilitateshierarchicalnetworkdesign,ithasbeenwidely
appliedinIPv4networks.
WiththeconstructionofIPv6networks,dynamicroutingprotocolsarealsorequiredto
provideaccurateandvalidroutinginformationforIPv6packetforwarding.Forthisreason,
IETFrevisedOSPFv2forIPv6networksanddevelopedOSPFv3.OSPFv3ismostlyused
inIPv6networkstoprovidetheroutingfunction.Itisamainstreamroutingprotocolapplied
inIPv6networks.
TheIPv6OSPFprotocolisOSPFv3,andtheIPv4OSPFprotocolisOSPFv2.
TheIPv6OSPFkeepsthemajorityofIPv4algorithms.TheessentialOSPFmechanism
remainsunchangedfromIPv4toIPv6.
BothOSPFv3andOSPFv2havealinkstatusdatabase.TheLinkStatusAdvertisement
(LSA)iscontainedinthelinkstatusdatabase,andthelinkstatusdatabasesofallrouters
inthesameareamustbekeptsynchronous.
Databasesynchronizationisimplementedthroughthedatabaseexchangeprocess,which
includesexchangingdatabasedescriptionpackets,linkstaterequestpacketsandlinkstate
updatepackets.Thesubsequentdatabasesynchronizationismaintainedthroughooding
withlinkstateupdatepacketsandlinkstateacknowledgmentpackets.
InbroadcastandNon-BroadcastMulticastAccess(NBMA)networks,bothOSPFv3
andOSPFv2usethehellopackettodiscoverandmaintainadjacencyandtoelectthe
DesignateRouter(DR)andBackupDesignateRouter(BDR).
OSPFv3andOSPFv2alsomaintainconsistencywitheachotherinsuchaspectsas
neighbordetermination,basicconceptofinter-arearoutes,redistributionofAutonomous
System(AS)externalroutes,andsoforth.
