GENERAL
1. INTRODUCTION
The Sportstar RTC airplane is equipped with the engine ROTAX 912 ULS2 or ROTAX 912 S2.
The ROTAX 912 is a four-cylinder four-stroke engine with opposed cylinders and one camshaft. Valve
trains: OHV engine. Cylinder bore of the engine 84 mm, stroke 61 mm. Engine displacement 1352
cm
3
. The compression ratio 11:1.
The engine is cooled by air and liquid; the cylinders are cooled by ram air; the cylinder heads are
cooled by liquid.
The engine lubrication system is designed with a dry-sump.
The recommended kinds of oil are shown in Section 12-00.
The ignition is doubled, contactless, of a condenser type.
For a uniform distribution of mixture, the engine is equipped with two constant depression carburettors
BING and with a mechanical fuel pump. Mixture charging: atmospheric pressure. The recommended
kinds of fuel are shown in Section 12-00.
The engine is started electrically, using a starter (12 V; 0,7 kW).
The engine is equipped with the generator of alternate current with the 12 V / 20 A regulator (rectifier).
Optionally the engine can be equipped with an auxiliary generator driven from the reduction gear case
(see Section 24-30).
The propeller is driven by the crankshaft via the reducer with a gear ratio of 2,43:1. The sense of
propeller rotation (the output shaft of the reducer) is clockwise. The speed reducer of the crankshaft is
equipped with the torsional vibration damping and depending on a manufactured version it is also
equipped with a slipping coupling.
The monitored parameters of the fuel system and the oil system are described in Chapters 28, 77 and
79.
