COWLING
1. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The engine cowlings serve as an aerodynamic cover of the engine.
The cowlings are designed as a two-piece composite pressed part; on the inner side, the cowlings are
provided with a non-flammable coating.
In the front part of the original engine cowlings, there is a circular cut-out for the flange and the
propeller shaft. In the new engine cowlings, there are larger air intakes at the front to increasing the
amount of cooling air. Both side inlets are equipped with a grille and on the inside part of the upper
engine cowling the deflectors are located. These elements serve to streamline the cooling air.The
lower part of the engine cowling is provided with holes that allow air supply into the engine
compartment. The outlet of air from the engine compartment is solved by a semielliptical cut-out
located in the rear part of the cowling. The exhaust pipe and the engine drains also lead to this hole.
The upper part of the engine cowling is provided on the left side with a cap for oil level check. The cap
for oil level check is provided with a Camlock. Optionally, the coolant control cap can be installed on
the right part of upper cowling.
The lower part of the cowling is attached by means of screws to the border of the firewall. The upper
part of the cowling is attached to the firewall by means of Camlocks. Both parts of the engine cowling
are mutually connected by means of Camlocks.
The attachment of the upper part of the engine cowling is designed with regard to an easy removal
during the preflight preparation.
After removing the upper engine cowling, it is possible to check the quantity of coolant and brake fluid,
refill oil, to perform a preflight check of the engine, etc.
The original and new versions of the engine cowlings are mutually interchangeable.
If the new engine cowlings are installed, the airplane is equipped with a smaller oil cooler (Section 79-
20).
