SETup & opERaTIon
Toremovethediefromtherearjaw,ensurebothcylindersareretracted.Removethehexboltsecuringtherearjawassembly,
thensliderearjawforwardenoughsothattheflat-headcapscrewssecuringthedieretainertabiswellexposed.Removethe
diefollowingthesameproceduresasfortheCLINCHER® cylinders.
Reversethisproceduretoinstallorreplacejaws.
F. TONG RIG-UP & LEVELING
1. Suspension & Restraint
Suspendthe tongandbackup froma locationasnear tothe centreofthe drillrotary aspossible,and froma location high
enoughonthemasttoensureeasyhandling. Thelowerthepointfromwhichthetongissuspended,themoreeffortwillbe
requiredtomovethetongandbackupassemblyontoandofftheconnection.
The suspension line may be extended over a pulley and balanced by a counterweight equalto the weight of the tongand
backup,orsimplytiedoffinthederricktoformadeadline.WhenusingadeadlinearrangementitisnecessarytouseaFARR
spring hangerassembly (see specification page for recommended spring hanger). This spring hanger compensates for the
downwardmovementofthecasingasthethreadismade-up,andimpartsadditionalforcetothesuspensioncable:
● a“singlespring”hangertypicallyapplies420lbs.(191kg.)tothesuspensionlineforeveryinchofthreadmadeup
● a“doublespring”hangertypicallyapplies840lbs.(382kg.)tothesuspensionlineforeveryinchofthreadmadeup
Ifyoudonotknowwhichspecificspringhangerisinuse,checkthespecificationpageinthismanualforinformationonthe
recommendedspringhangerforthisapplication. McCoy Drilling&Completionswillnotguaranteeor specify springhangers
otherthanwhathasbeensuppliedbyMcCoy.
Manyapplicationsusealiftcylinderforadjustingtheheightofthetong.Ensuretheweightoftheliftcylinderisknownifithas
notbeenincludedinthetotalweightofthetong.
Allforcesuponthesuspensionlinemustbeconsideredwhencalculatingnecessarystrengthofthesuspensionline.Theweight
ofthetong,theweightoftheliftcylinder,theweightofthespringhanger, and the force imparted on thesuspensionlineby
thespringhangermustallbeaddedtogetherinordertoarriveatthetotalforcesupportedbythesuspensionline.Selectyour
suspensionlinebaseduponthetotalforceandthemarginsofsafetydictatedbythepoliciesofyourcompanyandbyestab-
lishedengineeringpractices.Ultimately,calculatingtheforceonthesuspensionlineandselectionofthesuspensionlineisthe
completeresponsibilityofthecustomer.
