N. TUBULAR CONNECTION EQUIPMENT RE-COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE
Performthe followingrecommissioning procedureswhen removing tubular connection equipmentfrom shortor long-termstorage
backintoregularservice.Theseproceduresareessentialforensuringproperequipmentpreparationandoperation.Thefollowing
proceduresalsoassumethatthedecommissioningandstorageproceduresrecommendedbyFarrhavebeenstrictlyobserved.

Energizepowerunit.

Ensurethatsupplypressureisatorabovethetong’sspecifiedoperatingpressure,andthatthereturnpressureisless
than350psi.
9.
Performathoroughinspectionofpressurizedhydrauliclinesandfittings.Anyleakinghydraulicfluidlinesorfittingsmust
bereplacedbeforetheequipmentisreturnedtoservice.
10.
Performathoroughinspectionofallseals.Anysealthatisleakingor“weeping”mustbereplacedbeforetheequipment
isreturnedtoservice.
11.
Rotatetonginlowgearfor5minuteswhilemonitoringpressurizedsealsandhydrauliclines.Ifaseal,line,orfittingbegins
toleakwhiletongisrotating,itmustbereplacedbeforetheequipmentisreturnedtoservice.Finishthisstepwiththe
rotarygearopeningfacingthegeartrain.De-energizethepowerunit.
12.
Inspectallflexiblehydrauliclinesforsignsofwear,blistering,oranyothersignsofpotentialfailure-replaceifsignsof
potentialfailureareidentified.
13.
Inspectthegeartrainhousing.Iftheamountofgreaseisinadequate,liberallygreasethegeartrainthroughtheaccess
panel,andthroughtheopeningintherotarygear.
14.
Inspecttopandbottombrakebandlinings-replaceifnecessary.Unequalwearofthebrakebandsindicatesthatthe
brakebandtensionisnotevenlyadjusted.Refertothemaintenancesectionofthemanualforinstructionsonproperly
adjustingbrakebands.Ensurethatallgreaseiswipedfrombrakebandliningsandthepartsofthecageplatesthatcome
intocontactwiththebrakebandlinings
15.
Re-installaccesspanel.Installasetofpre-inspectedjawsthatarethecorrectsizeforthepipeorcasingbeingrun.
16.
Installloadcell.Ifusingatensionloadcell,performavisualinspectionandreplaceanycracked,broken,ordistorted
componentsincludinglinksandchains.Ifusingacompressionloadcell,replaceanycomponentthathasbeencrushed
orotherwisedistortedthroughcompression.
17.
Ifapplicable,inspecttheloadcellanchorpins(tensionloadcellonly).Replacetheanchorpinsifcrackingormetaldistor-
tionisseen.
18.
Ifapplicable,theweldsecuringthesingleloadcellanchortothebridgebarmainplatemustbeinspected(compression
loadcellonly).Iftheintegrityoftheweldhasbeencompromised,thetongmustberemovedfromserviceuntiltheweld
isrepaired.Theloadcellbeamwillneedtobedisconnectedandremovedsotheweldisvisible.Beforere-installingthe
beam,liberallygreasetheanchorpinbeforereinsertingintotheloadcellbeam.
19.
Re-energizepowerunit.
FAILURE TO ENSURE THAT THE SELF-SEALING SUPPLY AND RETURN LINES ARE FULLY
MADE UP MAY RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC EQUIPMENT FAILURE.
1.
Removeallprotectiveplasticwrapping.Iftherearedesiccantpackswiththeassembly,theymaybedisposedofwiththe
regulargarbage.
2.
Removetheaccesspanelonthesideofthetongdirectlyadjacenttotheshiftermechanism.
3.
Wipeexcessgreaseorheavyoilfromexposedcylinderrods.
4.
Ifapplicable,re-connectchainslingtoliftinglugs.Performavisualinspectionofallliftingpoints-ifvisibledamageisseen,
includingcracks,brokenlugs,distortedmetal,etc.replacedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingtonginservice.Alsoinspect
allchains,masterlinks,andturnbuckles-again,ifanydamageisnotedreplacethedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingthe
tonginservice.Ifyourcompanyrequiresyearlycertificationofliftingequipment,ensurethatthemostrecenttestdatefalls
withinthepastyear.Performrecertificationifnecessary.
5.
Performaliberallubricationoftheequipment-refertoMaintenancesectionofmanualtodeterminelubricationpoints.
Generouslyfillthegeartrainhousingwithgreasethroughtheaccesspanel,andalsothroughtheopeningintherotary
gear.
6.
Connecttheequipmenttoahydraulicpowerunit.Ensurealllinesarefullymadeuptopreventequipmentdamagefrom
excessivebackpressure.Donotneglecttoconnectthemotordrain.
