TRouBLESHooTIng
Adequate maintenance and proper fluid selection is essential for minimizing hydraulic-related failures. All troubleshooting must be
performedbyatechniciantrainedinhydraulicsystems,andfamiliarwiththeequipmentdesign,assemblyandoperation.
Thefollowingtroubleshootinginstructionsareintendedtobeguidelinesonly.Anyfaultsnotsolvedthroughtheuseofthisguideshould
bereferredtoourengineeringdepartmentfortheirevaluationandrecommendations.
A. TONG WILL NOT DEVELOP SUFFICIENT TORQUE
1. Malfunctioningreliefvalveontonghydrauliccircuit.
a. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Reliefpressuresettoolow.
SOLUTION:Increasesetting.Tocheck,blocktheoillinebeyondthereliefvalveanddeterminepressurewithagauge.
b. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Reliefvalveisstuck.
SOLUTION:Checkforcontaminationofoilthatmayinhibitthewaythevalveactuates.Removevalveandclean,ensur-
ingthatthevalvespringoperatessmoothly.
c. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Reliefvalveisleaking.
SOLUTION:Checkvalveseatforscouring.Checkoilseals.Checkforparticlesstuckunderthevalvesystem.
2. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Directionalvalveisleaking.
SOLUTION:Check directional valve.Neutral position should return fluiddirectly to thereservoir. Replace or repair valveto
ensurecorrectoperation.
3. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Powerunitisnotproducingadequatepressure.
SOLUTION:Troubleshootpowerunit(seeuser’smanualforyourparticularunit).
4. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Poorhydraulicpressureatthetongdespiteadequatepressureatthepowerunit,orexcessiveback
pressureinthereturnline.
SOLUTION:Restrictionsexistinlinebetweenpowerunitandtong.Inspectintegrityofself-sealingcouplingstoensurethey
areallowingfullfluidflow.Checktoensurenootherrestrictionsexist(contaminatedcatchscreensorfilters,forexample).
5. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Fluidviscosityisnotappropriate(toohighortoolow).
SOLUTION:EnsurehydraulicfluidbeingusedistheviscosityrecommendedbyMcCoyDrilling&Completions.Powerunitpump
maynotprimeiffluidistooheavy,andthehydraulicsystemwilloverheatiffluidistoolight.Replacewithproperviscosityfluid.
SOLUTION:Hydraulicfluidviscosityisaffectedbyenvironmentalconditions.Ensurethefluidbeingusedissuitableforhighor
lowtemperatures.Replacewithproperviscosityfluidfortheoperatingconditionsifnecessary.
6. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Wornordamagedtongmotorcausingslippage.
SOLUTION:Replaceorrepairwornordamagedmotor.
7. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Damagedbearingsorgearscausingexcessivedrag.
SOLUTION:Replaceorrepairwornordamagedgearsorbearings.
8. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Jawsslippingonpipe.
SOLUTION:Ensurejawdiesarenotworntothepointthattheycannotgrip.Ensurethecorrectsizedjawsareinuse.
9. POSSIBLEPROBLEM:Torquegaugeisindicatingincorrectly
SOLUTION:Incorrectgaugeisbeingused.Ensuregaugeistheproperrange,andhasbeenproperlycalibratedforthearm
lengthoftheequipmentinuse.
SOLUTION:Gaugehasbeendamaged.Checkgaugeoperationandcalibrationonindependentsystem.
