McCoyDrilling&Completionsrecommendsthatthefollowingpre-operatingtestsbeperformedafterreceiptfromthefactoryor
afterextendedstorage,priortoreleasingthetongtooperations:
• Performacompleteinspectionofallfastenerstoensurenonehaveloosenedduringtransport.
• Connectthetongtothepowerunit,andapplyfullhydraulicpressure.Inspectandcorrectanyleaks.
• Operatethetongatfullspeedandinhighgearforadurationofone-halfhour.Hotbearingcapsmayindicateimpending
bearingfailure.
• Switchtolowgearandoperateforanadditionalone-halfhouratfullspeed.
• Runthebackupthroughseveralclamp/un-clampsequencestoensurefunctionality.
• Inspectallcomponentsandhydraulicfittingsforpossibledefectsfollowingcompletionofthetests.AllFARRTongshave
beenthoroughlytestedatthefactorypriortoshipping,butshippingdamagemustbeidentifiedbeforerunningthetongin
anoperationalenvironment.
• Carefullyinspectthesafetydoorcomponents,andtesttoensurethatthesafetydeviceoneachdoorisoperatingcorrectly
beforereleasingthetongtotheoperatingenvironment.
YOUR EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY TESTED AND INSPECTED AT THE FACTORY.
HOWEVER, WE ADVISE INSPECTION AND TESTING OF YOUR NEW TONG AFTER TAKING
POSSESSION IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE POSSIBILITY OF SHIPPING DAMAGE.
G. TONG OPERATION
1. Operator Training
Manycompaniessetqualificationstandardsthatmustbemetbeforeequipmentismaybeoperatedwithoutsupervision.McCoy
Drilling&Completionsrecommendsoperatortraining,whichtypicallyconsistsofoperationoftheequipmentunderthesupervi-
sionofatrainedequipmentoperatoruntilasatisfactorylevelofcompetenceisachieved.Typicaloperatortrainingshouldinclude:
• Introductiontoandgeneraldescriptionofequipment
• Technicalspecificationsandperformancedata
• Operatinginstructions
• Controlsystemsandinterlocks
• Operatinghazards
• Checksandinspections
2. Initial Start-up and Break-in Procedure
Ensureadequatelubeoilandhydraulicoillevelsbeforestartingengine.Usestartupproceduresasrecommendedbythepower
unitengineoperator’smanual.OpentheBypassValveonthehydraulicsystem,andinspectallpressureandreturnlinehose
connectionstoensurecorrectandsecureinstallation.
TONG DOOR MUST BE CLOSED AND SECURELY LATCHED BEFORE THE POWER UNIT IS
STARTED IN ORDER TO ASSURE THE SAFETY OF OPERATING PERSONNEL
IMPROPERLY SECURED HYDRAULIC CONNECTIONS WILL INTERRUPT HYDRAULIC FLUID FLOW, AND COULD
RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING FAILURES:
● Arestrictioninthepressuresupplyhosewillresultinhighpressurewithinthepowerunithydraulicsystem,whichwill
activatethehydraulicgovernorandincreasetheenginespeedtoashighasmaximumRPM.
● Arestrictioninthereturnlinewillresultinhighpressurewithinthepowerunitandthetonghydraulicsystem,causing
enginespeedsashighasmaximumRPM,andpossiblefailureofthemotorseal.
Followinginspectionofthehoses,energizethehydraulicpowerunitandallowittoidleuntilwarm.Allowhydraulicfluidtocir-
culateforapproximately10minutes,thenslowlyclosetheBypassValvetoallowhydraulicfluidtocirculatethroughthehoses
andtothetong(circulatingpressureshouldnotexceed200psi).Placethetonggearshifterinlowgearandrotatethetong
slowlyforwardandthenreversewiththethrottlevalvecontrollever.Oncethishasbeendoneandthepropersizejawshave
