Suspension & Restraint (continued):
McCoyDrilling&Completionsrecommendsusingdualbackup(snub)linesofsufficientstrengthtowithstandtheforceimparted
bythemaximumratedtorqueofthetongandbackupassemblyinuse.Thesnublineswillarrestuncontrolledmovementofthe
tongandbackupintheeventslippingofthebackupjaws.Calculatetheforceonthesnublinesbydividingthemaximumtorque
ofthetongbythetong’storquearm(expressedinfeet).Forexample,a25,000lbs.-ft.tongwitha32inch(2.667ft.)torque
armwillgenerate9375lbs.offorceagainstthesnubline.Selectyoursnublinesbaseduponthetotalforceandthemarginsof
safetydictatedbythepoliciesofyourcompanyandbyestablishedengineeringpractices.Ultimately,calculatingtheforceon
thesnublineandselectionofthesnublineisthecompleteresponsibilityofthecustomer.
Snublinesmustbesecurelyconnectedtotherearofthetongandbackupassembly,andtiedofftoasuitableanchor.

ALL SELECTED FASTENERS, SHACKLES, CLAMPS, ETC. USED FOR CONSTRUCTING THE SUS-
PENSION AND SNUB LINES MUST BE RATED FOR THE CALCULATED FORCES.
2. Tong Leveling
Thetongmustbeleveledside-to-sideandfront-to-rearbeforeplacingintoservice.Thefollowingguidelineswilassistyouwhen
levelingyourtong.
i. Placea levelaxially (sideto side)acrossthetong, ensuring that itis parallel with the surface ofthetong. Use a thin
wrenchontheflatoftheadjustinghelixtorotatethehelix,forcingtheliftlinktomovetowardstheoutersupportsofthe
sling.The1”jamnutonthepinmayhavetobeslightlyloosenedtoallowthehelixtorotate.Adjustthehelixuntilthelevel
showsthatthetongislevelside-to-side-retightenthenutifnecessary
