SEPARATION OF TONG FROM BACKUP
1. Suspendtongassemblywithcrane.Constructasupportstructurethatwillsupporttheweightofthebackup.Lowerthetong/
backupassemblyontotheconstructedsupportuntilallweightisremovedfromfrontlegsuspensionsprings.
2. Disconnectallhydrauliclinesfromthebackup.
3. Removethenylocknutandboltsetsfromthebottomofthefrontlegs,andslidethelowerspringcapsandfrontlegcoilsprings
offeachleg.Notethatthetopspringcapswillremainwithinthebackupbodyassembly.
4. Disconnectthetworearbackupsupportspringsconnectingthebackuptotherearleg(notapplicableforlow-profilecompres-
sion-stylebackup).
5. Removetheloadcellassembly.
6. Lifttongandlegsupandawayfromthebackup,andsettongontoaflatworksurfacethatwillsupporttheweightofthetong,
andallowaccesstothebottomplate-ensurethatthelegsdonothaveanyweightonthem.
REMOVAL OF LEG ASSEMBLIES.
7. Removetherearlegassemblybyremovingtwo1-1/4”x8”hexboltandnutsetsandtwo7/8”x9”hexboltandnutsets.
8. Removethefrontlegassembliesbyremovingthe1/2”x3-3/4”boltsandnutsetoneachleg,andslidelegtubesoutofleg
mountweldments.
REMOVAL OF TOP PLATE
9. Removetherigidslingassemblybydisconnectingthelevelingdevicesfromthehangerbrackets.
10. Removethetworigidslinghangerbrackets.
11. Disconnectthe three hydraulic connections fromthe motor.Undo the restraints securing theinlet andoutlet lines from their
supports,andliftthehydraulicvalvesectionawayfromthetong.Removetheinletandoutletsupportpieces.
12. Removetopbrakebandassembly(leaveadjustmentlugweldmentsinplacefornow).
13. Removethetongdoorstopcylinder.
F. RECOMMENDED PERIODIC CHECKS
1. Door Stop Spring
Thespringinsidetheactuatorcylindermustbeofsufficientstrengthtoenablethedoorlatchmechanismtosnapclosedprop-
erly, and toholdthedoor intheopenposition when opened.Doorstopspring fatiguewillresultin sluggish latchoperation.
Replacethelatchspringinsidethecylinderwhenthisoccurs.
2. Backing Pin
Performavisualinspectionofthebackingpinaftereachjob.Replacethepinifstresscracksorexcessivewearisfound,orif
eitherpinisbent.
3. Shifting Shaft
Theshiftingyokeissecuredtotheshiftingshaftbyalocknutonthebottomoftheyoke.Checklockingnutsaftereachjob.Do
thisbyremovingtheclutchinspectionplateandensuringasnugfitpriortolubrication.
4. Torque Gauge Assembly
Periodiccalibrationofthetorquegaugeisrecommendedtoassureaccuratetorquereadings.Whenhavingthetorquegauge
servicedandcalibrated,itiscriticaltonotethearmlengthofthetong,asindicatedinthe“Specifications”section.Farrrecom-
mendsthat the torquegauge assembly be calibrated yearly. Periodically check to ensurethe load cellis filled with oil (see
Section6).
G. OVERHAUL PROCEDURES
Thetongmaybeoverhauledfollowingthedisassemblyinstructionsinthefollowingprocedure.Accesstothegeartrainispossible
byremovingthetopplateofthetong.
ALL MAINTENANCE AND OVERHAUL SHOULD BE PERFORMED FROM THE TOP. THE BOTTOM
PLATE OF THE TONG IS TYPICALLY WELDED TO THE SIDE BODY AND CANNOT BE REMOVED.
REPLACEMENT FASTENERS (BOLTS, NUTS, CAP SCREWS, MACHINE SCREWS, ETC.) USED
DURING MAINTENANCE OR OVERHAUL MUST BE GRADE 8 OR EQUIVALENT.
FASTENERS USED FOR MAINTENANCE OR OVERHAUL OF LOAD-BEARING COMPONENTS
(CHAIN SLINGS, RIGID SLINGS, LEGS) MUST BE TIGHTENED TO THE PROPER TORQUE.
