BiodieselusageinMILLERproducts
IntroductiontoFattyAcidMethylEster
(FAME)biodiesel
FAMEbiodiesel,calledbiodieselfuelinthefollowingsec-
tion,consistsofafamilyoffuelsderivedfromvegetable
oilstreatedwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:Rapeseed
MethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).
RMEisablendofrapeseedandsunowermethylester,
andisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthepreferred
cropintheUnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Its
useanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especially
inEuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:Youremissionscontrolsystemiscompatible
withupto5%biodieselfuel(B5).Beawarethattheuse
ofbiodieselfuelthatdoesnotcomplywiththestandards
mentionedinthissectioncouldleadtoseveredamage
totheengine,fuelsystemoraftertreatmentsystemof
yourmachine.Theuseofnon-approvedfuelsmayvoid
MILLERWarrantycoverage.
BiodieselcanbeusedtorunTier4B(nal)andStageIV
dieselenginesonlywhenblendedwithstandarddiesel
fuel:
B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieseland95%diesel
fuels.
B20:indicatestheblendof20%biodieseland80%
dieselfuels.Donotuse.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparison
withdieselfuel:
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel,whichisbene-
cialinmanycircumstances,particularlyassulfurand
aromaticsareremovedfromthefuel.
Biodieselhasagreatercetanenumberandburns
cleaner.
Biodieselproduceslessparticulatematterandreduces
smokeemissions.
Biodieselisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.
Dieselandbiodieselfuelspecications
Tier4B(nal)andStageIVdieselfuelspecicationsare
coveredbythefollowing:
ASTMD975,StandardSpecicationforDieselFuel
Oils.(15ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Biodieselblendsarecoveredby:
UnitedStatesDieselFuelSpecicationASTMD975al-
lowsupto5%biodieselsince2009.UnitedStatesfuel
suppliersareallowedtouseupto5%biodieselfuel(B5)
tosupplythenetwork.
UnitedStatesBiodieselFuelSpecicationASTM
D7467providesspecicationsfordieselandbiodiesel
blendsfromB5toB20.
Purebiodieselblendstock(B100)specicationis
coveredbythefollowingrequirements:
ASTMD6751-Standardspecicationforbiodieselfuel
blendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
NOTE:ASTMD6751specicationhasbeenupdated
toimprovethequalityofbiodieselinthemarketplace.
Beforerawoilcanbeconvertedintousablebiodiesel
fuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglyc-
erides.Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoil
reactswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinefrom
thefatorvegetableoil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwo
products:methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)
andglycerine(abyproductusuallysoldforuseinsoaps
orotherproducts).
NOTICE:BiodieselfuelsapprovedforuseintheMILLER
equipmentmustbetransesteriedandcomplywiththe
latestNorthAmericaStandardASTMD6751.
NOTICE:ColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,
StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunre-
nedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuel,arefuelsthatare
normallymadefromRapeseedoilorsimilarhighoilcon-
tentcrops.Thesekindsoffuelarenottransesteried,so
theydonotfulltheASTMD6751requirements.Thereis
norecognizedqualitystandardavailableforthesetypes
offuel.ThereforetheuseofColdPressedBiodiesel,
ColdPressedOil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormore
generallyunrenedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuelare
NOTAPPROVEDatanyblendinanyMILLERproduct.
NOTICE:Anyengineandfuelinjectionequipmenttted
toaMILLERvehiclefoundtohaverunwithanyblendof
NON-APPROVEDfuel(fuelnotfulllingthespecication
describedintherequirementASTMD6751)willnolonger
becoveredforWarrantybyMILLER.
Biodieselfuelusageconditions
Youmuststringentlyfollowthebiodieselfuelusagecon-
ditions.Incorrectapplicationofthebiodieselfuelusage
conditionscouldleadtoseveredamagetotheengine,
fuelinjectionequipmentandaftertreatmentsystem.
Themainconcernsrelatedtooperationwithbiodiesel
fuelsare:
Filtersandinjectorblockagecausedbypoorfuelqual-
ity.
Wearandcorrosionofinternalcomponentsduetowa-
tercontent,whichaffectslubricity.
Deteriorationofsomerubbersealingcompoundsinthe
fuelsystem.
