MAINTENANCE GENERAL
5.7 Checking and adjusting
injection timing
To check and adjust injection timing, use the following
procedure:
1. Disconnect the No. 1 injection pipe.
2. Remove the No. 1 delivery valve from the injection
pump. Put back the valve holder only.
3. Remove the tie-rod cover and disconnect the tie-
rod from the control rack.
4. Set the control rack to a midway position in the
working range.
5. Open the fuel feed pipe and make sure that fuel
flows from the delivery valve holder.
6. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of normal
rotation (clockwise) and find an instant that fuel
stops flowing from the delivery valve holder. This
instant is the real injection timing.
7. If they do not coincide with each other, adjust
thickness of the injection pump mounting shim.
Increasing or decreasing shim thickness by 0.1
mm [0.0039 in.] causes the real injection timing to
vary about 1°.

CAUTION
The standard injection timing differs with engine

Check to see whether the real injection timing
coincides with the standard injection timing (whether
the IT mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the
mark on the gear case).
