PLANET Code
Barcode
Postal Alpha-Numeric Encoding Technique (PLANET) provides features that
are not currently available with the POSTNET barcode. PLANET barcodes
are broken down to a list of planets. The following is a list of each planet and
the applications supported by that planet’s particular PLANET barcode.
Planet Digits Description
Jupiter 12 Barcode containing mail piece rate, presort bureau origin,
and customer identification
Mercury 12 Barcode used for CONFIRM or CIPS service
Earth 12 Barcode used for sorting foreign mail.
Pluto 12 Barcode for automated address correction requests.
Saturn 12 or 14 Barcode for RTS or CFS mail
Neptune 12 Barcode for mailer use
Venus 12 or 14 Barcode used for electronic tracking
The PLANET barcodes have the exact same dimensional requirements as
POSTNET barcodes.
Most PLANET barcodes are placed in the address block portion of the mail
piece.
NOTE: Only PLANET Earth and Saturn barcodes may be printed in the tradi-
tional lower right area.
Example of using a PLANET bar code in the address block while placing a
USPS barcode below the address.
A PLANET code barcode will print on a line when the first two characters in the
line are a tilde followed by the pound character (~#) then the digits that repre-
sent the desired PLANET code (see figure below).
TIP: Other valid tilde
commands are:
~^ (IMBC) generic
~! Japanese 4-state
