Removal (Fig. 27)
1. Park the machine on a level surface, engage the
parking brake and stop the engine. Remove the key
from the ignition switch.
2. Lowertheenginemountingplateassemblyfromma-
chine (see Engine Mounting Plate Assembly Removal
intheServiceandRepairsSectionofChapter3 --Kohler
Gasoline Engine).
3. Label all hydraulic connections for assembly pur-
poses.Cleanhydraulichoseendspriortodisconnecting
the hoses from steering cylinder.
CAUTION
Before disconnecting components or perform-
inganyworkonhydraulicsystem,allpressurein
the system must be relieved by stopping the en-
gine and rotating the steering wheel in both
directions.
4. Disconnect hydraulic hoses from steering cylinder
(Fig. 28). Allow hoses to drain into a suitable container.
5. Putcapsorplugsondisconnectedhosesandfittings
to prevent contamination.
6. Remove cotter pin and hex slotted nut that secure
the barrel end of the steering cylinder to the frame.
7. Remove cotter pin, flat washer and hex slotted nut
that secure the shaft end of the steering cylinder to the
steering pivot.
8. Remove steering cylinder from machine.
9. Ifrodendisremovedfromcylindershaft,countnum-
ber of revolutions it takes to remove from shaft so rod
end can be re--installed without affecting steering.
Installation (Fig. 27)
1. Ifrodendwasremovedfromcylindershaft,applyan-
tiseize lubricant to threads of rod end. Install rod end
ontoshaftthesamenumberofrevolutionsneededtore-
move rod end. Secure rod end with jam nut.
2. Position shaft end of cylinder to the steering pivot.
Install flat washer and slotted hex nut finger tight to rod
end.
3. Position barrel end of cylinder to the frame. Install
slotted hex nut finger tight to barrel rod end.
4. Tightenslottedhex nuts tosecure cylinderrodends.
Install cotter pins.
5. Remove caps and plugs from disconnected hoses
and fittings.
6. Connect hydraulic hoses to steering cylinder (Fig.
28).Tightenhoseconnections(seeHydraulicHoseand
Tube Installation in the General Information section of
this chapter).
7. Check fluid level in transaxle and adjust as required
(see Operator’s Manual).
8. After assembly is completed, operate steering cylin-
dertoverifythathydraulichosesandfittingsarenotcon-
tacted by anything.
9. Raise the engine mounting plate assembly to ma-
chine(seeEngineMountingPlateAssemblyInstallation
intheServiceandRepairsSectionofChapter3 --Kohler
Gasoline Engine).
