2.4 Machine Sp ecic Instructions 27
For the Indy computers you will required a cable with a
high-density 50 pin D
connector
on one end and a
50 pin Centronics type connector
on the other end.
This may also be called a
SCSI-1 to SCSI-2
cable. It should be available from
your SGI hardware supplier or can be ordered from your
DAT-Link
supplier (CB-
MICROD).
For the O2 workstations, you will need a cable with a
wide 68-pin D connector
on
one end and a
50 pin Centronics typeconnector
on the other end. This may also b e
called a
SCSI-3 to SCSI-1
cable. It should be available from your SGI hardware
supplier. Note: If you want to mix both wide (68-pin) and narrow (50-pin) SCSI
devices to the O2's bus, you have connect the 68-pin devices rst on the bus, and
then daisychain the 50-pin devices, like the
DAT-Link
.
Cho osing a SCSI ID
You must select a SCSI ID for the
DAT-Link
that is not already in use by a disk
drive, tape drive, CD ROM or other device on the same SCSI bus. Be aware that
some mo dels have 2 SCSI controllers. For example, the O2's external SCSI bus is
bus 1, bus 0 b eing the internal one.
SCSI ID's can b e chosen in the range 1 to 6. Once an ID is chosen, set the SCSI
ID switch on the rear of the
DAT-Link
accordingly.
7
Note that this switch is only
read when the
DAT-Link
is powered up, so if you change it, b e sure to power-cycle
the
DAT-Link
.
The SCSI ID's of all devices connected, including the
DAT-Link
, can be checked
by using the
hinv
command either while the system is running or from the System
Monitor when the system is shut down. See the users manuals supplied with your
workstation for details on using
hinv
.
Connecting the
DAT-Link
The next step is to connect the
DAT-Link
to the computer. Since it is necessary to
unterminate the SCSI bus temp orarily, it is recommended that you shut-down and
turn o the computer before making the connection.
The
Options
switches on the rear of the
DAT-Link
should b e set with all switches
down. Then connect the
DAT-Link
to the computer using the SCSI cable. If the
DAT-Link
is the last device on the SCSI bus, be sure to connect the provided SCSI
terminator between the cable and the
DAT-Link
's SCSI connector.
Once it is hooked up and powered on you can rebo ot the computer. If you have
trouble rebooting, verify that the SCSI ID selected on the
DAT-Link
was not one
7
The
DAT-Link
's SCSI ID switch go es up to 9, but the 8 and 9 settings are only for factory
testing. The computer itself uses SCSI ID 0. Although SCSI ID 7 should work, IRIX does not
appear to recognize it.
