46 NetAudio Server
3.1 Starting the Server
The server should b e started on the computer to which the
DAT-Link
is connected
before any of the client programs are used. Note that although the clients can be
run from anywhere on the network, the server must be run on the machine with
the
DAT-Link
. In the typical environment, the server can be started with the
command:
naserver
If all goes well, there will b e no output from this program and it will exit immediately
after initializing. However a subprocess will have been created which will manage
communications with the DAT-Link. If there are any errors during the op eration of
naserver
, they will b e logged using the system error logging facilities (
syslogd
).
Usually this will result in the messages b eing written to
/usr/adm/messages
or
/var/log/syslog
.
For testing, the NetAudio daemon can also b e started for a single invo cation with
error messages displayed on the terminal by using the command:
netaudiod
Once
naserver
is running, client programs can be run. The program,
naversion
,
described in Section 10.1, is a client which just displays the version numb ers of the
server and the
DAT-Link
hardware. It also provides a simple test that the server
is functional:
naversion
More detailed information ab out the server's status can be obtained using the
nastatus
program described in Section 10.2.
For non-standard congurations,
naserver
provides a few options. If only a single
DAT-Link
is connected to the host, it will normally b e congured as unit 0, and
the device created during installation will be
/dev/datlink0
. To start a server
for a dierent unit, the
-u
option can be given to
naserver
. This allows multiple
DAT-Links
to be used on the same machine, each with a separate NetAudio server
and unit number. Chapter 9 describ es use of multiple
DAT-Links
in greater detail.
Additional options to
naserver
are describ ed in the manual page for the program
included in App endix G.
For most installations, you will want the NetAudio always running on machines
with the
DAT-Link
connected. This is most easily accomplished by having the
system administrator add a few lines to the system startup le, usually
/etc/rc
or
/etc/rc.lo cal
to start
naserver
. Assuming the
DAT-Link
programs were installed
in
/usr/lo cal
, adding the following few lines to
/etc/rc.lo cal
would suce on a
SUN workstation:
