5.4 Stereo or Mono 53
whether problems in playback are due to the connections b etween the host computer
and the
DAT-Link
or in the connection to the digital audio equipment.
On the
DAT-Link
+, there are a number of additional front-panel indications. The
top Left and Right
Level
LED's indicate when the playback level exceeds -1 dB
relative to full-scale. This is often indicative that clipping is taking place. The
lower
Level
LED's provide activity indicators that are lit when the playback level
exceeds -30 dB. The intensity of this LED is prop ortional to the playback level.
The
Pause
LED is lit whenever the
DAT-Link
+ is paused either internally or
externally. This may b e due to synchronization with external equipment or due to
explicit control using the
naset
program.
5.4 Stereo or Mono
Unless the le b eing played contains a header with additional information, the
naplay
program assumes that the le data contains stereo data with the twochan-
nels interspersed. The rst sample in the le is for the left channel, followed by
the rightchannel, etc. If a dierent playback mode is required, the
-o
option can
be used. The option should b e followed by one of the words
left
,
right
,
mono
,or
stereo
. These can be abbreviated to a single letter. The
-o
overrides any defaults
and forces playback to either a single channel (left or right) or to b oth channels
(stereo or mono). The
mono
option plays back the same single-channel data stored
in the le on b oth output channels.
For example,
naplay -oleft file
will transfer the single channel samples from the le to the left channel of the DAT
machine. The rightchannel will b e silent.
5.5 Playing Part of a File
There are a numb er of options available for selecting a segment of a le for playback.
The
-r
option selects a range of the le to playback. The
-r
ag is followed bya
range specied as
start-end
,
start:end
,or
start:+count
, where
start
and
end
are resp ectively the rst and last sample numbers to play. Either
start
or
end
may
be omitted in which case the beginning or end of the le is used.
naplay -r 8000:16000 file
will begin playback at the 8,000th sample in the le and stop at the 16,000th sample.
