2.6 Software Installation 35
The
DAT-Link
software will then allow you to select the input source from the
computer.
It is imp ortant to realize that there are subtle dierences in the control information
that is sent along with the audio data on these dierent connectors. The two
main formats of this information can be broadly categorized into
Consumer
and
Professional
. The various programs used with the
DAT-Link
allow you to select
which format to use. For most applications, if you are using the SPDIF or ber-
optic connections, the
consumer
format should b e used. For AES/EBU connections,
the
professional
format should be selected. Some DAT machines will not operate
at all unless the correct format is used.
2.6 Software Installation
The
DAT-Link
software is distributed on four typ es of media:
1
4
00
cartridge tape,
DOS diskettes, a data DAT tape (DDS), or audio DAT tap e which can be read
using the
DAT-Link
itself. Since the
DAT-Link
can be used on many dierent
types of workstations; each with its own unique type of tap e drive, DAT tape is
the preferred distribution media. If you received the software on cartridge tape or
DDS data DAT, refer to Section 2.6.3 for instructions on loading the tape. For DOS
installations, you will need to follow the instructions in Section 2.6.4.
2.6.1 Installation from DAT Tap e
The
DAT-Link
software is normally distributed on aDATtap e that can be read
using the
DAT-Link
. Note that the supplied tap e can
not
be read using a DATor
4mm data tap e drive|an audio DAT machine and the
DAT-Link
must be used.
Before beginning the installation, you should cho ose a directory in which to install
the source software. You will require approximately 8 Mbytes of free space for the
installation. The following instructions assume that the sources will be placed in
/usr/lo cal/src/datlink
, but any directory may be substituted. Note that the
user that runs the installation must have write p ermission in this directory and
also in the directories that will b e ultimately used to hold the executable programs,
manual pages, etc. Since these will usually be system directories, you may need to
become sup er-user to install the software.
Installation Steps (
DAT-Link
+):
1. Change directory to the location where you want the
DAT-Link
sources in-
stalled. See section 2.6.1 ab ove for assistance in choosing an appropriate
directory.
