80 Using Multiple DAT-Links
9.1 Synchronization
To record or playback audio les using multiple
DAT-Links
,twotyp es of synchro-
nization come into play:
Sample-rate synchronization to guarantee that multiple units are operating
at exactly the same rates.
Start-time synchronization to ensure that playback or recording b egin at the
same time.
Normally, b oth types of synchronization are required for playback. However, there
are some cases where multiple units may be op erated at dierent sampling rates.
One example is output of a low frequency control variable along with a wide-band
audio signal. In these cases only the start-time synchronization is required. Note,
however, that if the sample-rates of multiple units are not lo cked, it is not possible
to align the start-time with accuracy greater than plus or minus one sample.
Since the digital audio inputs to the
DAT-Link
are self-clo cking, the
DAT-Link
cannot enforce sample-rate synchronization during recording. The signals must be
synchronized at their source by the external equipment. If the inputs are externally
synchronized at the same rate, then the
DAT-Link
can ensure that the rst sample
recorded from multiple units are exactly aligned. If the sources are not sample-rate
synchronized, then the start-time synchronization will only b e accurate to plus or
minus one sample.
The synchronization systems used by dierent
DAT-Link
versions are substantially
dierent and are described separately in the sections b elow. The version number
of your
DAT-Link
can be found on the serial number plate on the b ottom of the
DAT-Link
or by running
naversion
.
9.1.1 Synchronization with
DAT-Link
+ Version 1.6
The
DAT-Link
+ provides an 8-pin
Sync
connector for b oth sampling-rate and start-
time synchronization of input and output. An external clockavailable from your
DAT-Link
supplier
1
, is required to feed the
DAT-Link
+ with all necessary signals
to synchronize playback sampling-rates and playback or recording start-time. The
Sync
connector can also be used for sp ecialized applications such as an external
pause or fo ot-switch control. See Appendix C.2 for details on the
Sync
connector
and its pinout.
