52 Playback Tutorial
5.1.2 Listening to a File Without Recording
To listen to a le (live playback) without recording, the same instructions can b e
followed with one exception | instead of starting the tape recording, put the DAT
machine into
record-standby
mode. This is usually accomplished by pressing either
just the
record
button or both the
record
and
pause
buttons on the DAT machine.
The DAT's user manual should provide details on placing the machine in this mo de.
While the DATisin
record-standby
mode, the digital audio provided by the
DAT-
Link
will b e converted to its analog form by the DAT machine allowing you to listen
to the output using the DAT's analog or headphone outputs.
5.2 Running the
naplay
Program
The
naplay
program allows you to transfer audio data from a disk le to the
DAT-
Link
for either listening or recording. It has numerous options, but in its simplest
form you may simply type:
naplay file
where
le
is the name of a le containing the audio data. In this form,
naplay
identies the type of the le using some heuristics and interprets any header present
to set up the
DAT-Link
parameters. If the le type is not recognized,
naplay
assumes the le contains stereo audio data sampled at 48,000 samples/second and
stored as 16 bit signed integers. The entire le will be played once.
If you are running
naplay
on a machine on a local area network other than the one
connected to the
DAT-Link
,you will need to set the
AUDIO DEVICE
environment
variable before running
naplay
. See 3.2 for more details.
The following sections describe the various options available to override the defaults.
A short summary of these options is available at any time by simply typing:
naplay -help
You can also refer to the online manual page (a copy of which in included in Ap-
pendix G).
5.3 Front Panel Indications
While the
DAT-Link
is sending valid data to its digital audio outputs, the
Playback
LED on the front panel should b e on. A quickcheck of this light can help isolate
