5.7 Sampling Rates 55
data sampled at 44,100 samples/second. Also note that whenever the DAT rate is
changed, the DAT machine may take a few seconds to lo ck to the new rate. Some
machines may cut o the beginning of the audio output or generate a click when this
happens. Subsequent playback at the same rate should not exhibit this problem.
There are also some sp ecial settings of the
-S
option used to synchronize the output
with an external source. These are invoked by prexing the DAT sampling rate with
a letter as follows:
A:
Select the AES/EBU input connector as the clock source. Outgoing digital
audio data will be at the same sampling rate as the incoming signal.
SorR:
Select the SPDIF (IEC Typ e I I) input as the clock source.
F:
Select the b er-optic input as the clo ck source.
E:
Use the
Word Clock
or
Sync
connector on the rear of the
DAT-Link
as the
source for the sampling clock.
G:
Generate clocks on the external clo ck or sync connector.
For the
A
,
S
,or
F
settings, a valid digital audio signal such as is generated byaCD
player or DAT machine must be applied to the selected input. Note that a DAT
sampling rate must still be specied, even though an external clock will be used.
This is necessary is order for
naplay
to prop erly design a sample-rate converter, if
required.
To set the external or sync
1
input as the clock source, assuming the input will b e
nominally 44,100 samples/second, you would use:
naplay -S E44100 file
The external clock or sync connector can also be used as a clo ck source instead
of input. When the letter
G
is sp ecied before the DAT sampling rate, on the
naplay
command line, a clock is output on the external clo ck or sync connector.
For example,
naplay -S G48000 file
uses the internal oscillator to generate a 48,000 samples/sec clock and outputs it on
the external clo ck connector. This allows other devices or
DAT-Links
to b e slaved
o a master device as describ ed in Section 9.1. External clock input and output
can also be controlled by the
naset
program described in Section 10.3.
