SAMPLE CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS GRAFT (CABG) FLOW MEASUREMENT PROTOCOL USING
PERIVASCULAR FLOWPROBES
Turn on AureFlo
®
Monitor and HT300 Series Compatible Flowmeter. Launch FlowTrace
®
software.
Turn on [FlowSound
®
].
Vessel preparation. Vein grafts typically require no preparation. Internal mammary pedicle: skeletonize
vessel distally, leaving 1 cm length exposed at the anastomosis.
Select a Flowprobe size for a non-constrictive t (graft diameter between 75% - 100% of the vessel slot
width.)
Apply sterile ultrasonic couplant to the window of the Probe. This will ensure good ultrasound signal.
Place the Flowprobe head on the graft bending the exible neck as needed. Avoid placing the Flowprobe
over surgical clips or sutures.
Verify quality of ultrasound contact between Probe and vessel.
Measure ow. FlowSound
®
is available immediately. Mean ow readings take approximately 10-
15 seconds to stabilize. Switch to Recording mode to save data for Patient Record. Snapshots of the
Recording can be taken later from the Portfolio mode.
FLOW MEASUREMENTS
Follow AureFlo
®
Operation for displaying, capturing and printing data (VI. AureFlo
®
Operation, page 21).
B. Tubing Flow Measurements with Clamp-On Flowsensors
CLEANING & STERILIZATION
Clamp-on Flowsensors must be cleaned before use (page 28). Sterilization is not required for use outside
of the surgical eld, however Sensors may be disinfected.
FLOWSENSOR SELECTION
Flowsensor size and calibration is determined by the tubing on which it will be used. Each Transonic
®
clamp-on Flowsensor is designed and calibrated for use on particular size and type of tubing (silicone
rubber, latex, polyurethane, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC)). Use on tubing other than specied can produce
inaccurate measurements and may cause erratic zero baseline drift.
CHECK FLOWSENSOR CALIBRATION
Flowsensors are precalibrated for measuring blood at body temperature. Recalibration is necessary for
accurate measurements at other temperatures, or in other liquids.
SELECT SITE
The Flowsensor may be applied on straight tubing segments, near side branches or on curved tubing
segments to produce measurements within its accuracy specications. Apply the Flowsensor below the
highest elevation of the tubing (where gas bubbles might lodge). The Flowsensor will reshape the tube
slightly into a rectangular shape. If the tubing site becomes permanently reshaped at one clamping
position, choose another site to achieve better ultrasonic transmission.
LUBRICATE TUBING
Apply a layer of petroleum jelly over the tubing surface to enable ultrasonic transmission between tube
and Sensor. For long term use (such as ECMO), do not use water based ultrasonic couplants as a tubing
lubricant as these will dry out and leave a lm on the Sensor surface which can degrade signal
