How video calls work
Every video call starts as a normal phone call. At this point, if either person initiates a
video connection, then the other person receives an on-screen instruction to press
their VIDEO button to accept the video connection.
Once the other person has pressed VIDEO to accept, the normal phone call will
convert to a video call. Note – it takes up to 30 seconds for a normal call to convert
to a video call – during this time you won’t be able to hear the other person and
they won’t be able to hear you. When the call successfully converts, you will see the
other person on the screen and the sound will be restored. To end a video call, hang
up as you would normally.
& Note, due to the inherent delay in digital video transmission, the sound will
not be in exact synchronisation with the picture during video calls. This may
be more noticeable when watching and listening to the other person speak.
Payment
In addition to a normal phone call charge (which is always incurred by the caller), there
is an extra fixed charge for a video call. Note – this video charge is incurred by the
person who initiates the video connection, even if that person did not make the
original phone call.
The video charge is displayed on the screen before you initiate the video
connection. The charge will be the same regardless of the length of the video
call. Remember – if the other person initiates the video connection, then you
don’t pay the video charge.
If you have initiated a video call, then at some time in the following 24 hours, the
e-m@iler will make a video payment call. This call will appear on your normal
telephone bill. Note, if the video connection was unsuccessful, then the video payment
call will not take place.
Do not disconnect the e-m@iler or prevent it from making
a video payment call. If you do so, the videophone facility
will be disabled. (You will receive an on-screen warning
beforehand.)
