6. EtherNet/IP cyclic operation
6.1. PLC (EtherNet/IP scanner)
In an EtherNet/IP network the encoder acts as an EtherNet/IP adapter. The programmable logic controller
(PLC) acts as an EtherNet/IP scanner. There are several EtherNet/IP scanners from different vendors
available. The PLC exchanges cyclic and acylic data with the encoder.
6.2. Basics
For cyclic operation a so-called cyclic process data image is used. This image contains input and output
data. The EAx580 EtherNet/IP encoder only sends cyclic process data to the master. From the master to the
EtherNet/IP encoder no cyclic process data is transmitted. EtherNet/IP adapters implement a state machine
which consists of several device states. The device states are documented in the following picture
(according to specification “The CIP Networks Library Volume 1”, Edition 3.24, figure 5A-2.2).
