CATERPILLAR REGENERATION SYSTEM
The Caterpillar Regeneration system includes
a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), an After-
treatment Regeneration Device (ARD) and
an Electronic Control Module (ECM). The
Caterpillar Regeneration System operates
automatically.
Soot generation is a normal side effect
of engine operation. The DPF (located in
the exhaust system) collects this soot. The
soot is then converted to gas by a process
called regeneration. There are two types of
regeneration: passive and active. The ECM
monitors engine operating conditions and
determines when regeneration is necessary and
if passive or active regeneration is required.
Regeneration occurs at threshold speeds
automatically determined by the ECM
depending on soot levels. At low soot levels, the
ECM will only initiate regeneration at speeds
greater than 20 mph. At elevated soot levels, the
ECM will initiate regeneration at speeds greater
than 5 mph.
Passive Regeneration:
Passive regeneration uses heat from normally
occurring exhaust gas to convert the soot to gas.
Active Regeneration:
Active regeneration occurs when exhaust
temperatures are not high enough for
regeneration and/or soot levels are high. The
ECM monitors engine operating conditions and
soot levels. If normal exhaust temperatures are
not high enough for regeneration, and if soot
levels continue to rise, the ARD is utilized to
elevate exhaust temperatures so regeneration
can occur. The ARD will introduce diesel fuel
into the exhaust system upstream of the DPF.
The fuel will ignite and super-heat the DPF
to oxidize particulate matter (soot). Active
regeneration will cause elevated exhaust gas
temperatures as high as 1200º F.
CAUTION:
Use extreme caution if parking
the motorhome during an active
regeneration cycle. The HEST light
will illuminate if exhaust temperatures
are above 842º F and speed is less
than 5 mph. The exhaust system and
exhaust gas will be extremely hot to
the point of fire hazard. DO NOT park
the motorhome on or around anything
combustible. Keep all people and pets
out of exhaust gas path.
Regeneration and Engine Idle:
During long periods of stationary
engine operation at low idle (which is not
recommended), a type of regeneration can
occur called Enhanced Passive Plus (EPP).
During EPP, the ARD will elevate exhaust
gas temperature, and engine RPM will ramp
up to 700 rpm. The HEST light (see “CRS
Indicator Lights”) will not illuminate as exhaust
temperatures will not reach 842º F.
WARNING:
Use Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)
only. DO NOT use Low Sulfur Diesel
(LSD) with a DPF equipped engine.
LSD will damage the DPF, which may
cause the Stop Engine light to illuminate
and the engine to severely derate.
NOTE:
If the engine is turned off during
a regeneration cycle, the cycle
will automatically begin again (if
necessary) when the motorhome is
operated at speeds above the threshold
automatically determined by the CRS.
CRS Indicator Lights
Two dash indicator lights are incorporated into
the CRS system to inform the operator of high
exhaust temperatures (HEST) or the need for
regeneration (DPF).
DPF Dash Light:
A DPF (Diesel Particulate
Filter) indicator light on
the dash illuminates when a
regeneration cycle is necessary
and has not been able to initiate.
At this point, driving the
motorhome above speeds of 5
mph will allow a regeneration
cycle to initiate. The DPF light
will not illuminate at speeds
greater than 20 mph.
HEST Dash Light:
The HEST (High Exhaust
System Temperature) light
will turn on when exhaust gas
temperature is above 842º F,
and road speed is less than 5
mph. The HEST light will not
illuminate at speeds greater
than 5 mph.
