Performavisualinspectionofallliftingpoints-ifvisibledamageisseen,includingcracks,brokenlugs,distortedmetal,
etc.replacedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingtonginservice.Alsoinspectallchains,masterlinks,andturnbuckles-
again,ifanydamageisnotedreplacethedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingthetonginservice.RefertoSection2Aof
thetechnicalmanual(Sling/LoadBearingDeviceSafety)forinformationonrecommendedtestingandrecertification.
Pleasenotethatturnbuckleswithpartnumber101-3086(shortturnbuckles)useahigh-strengthpinwhichmustbe
suppliedbyFarr.
Ifusingastand-alonepowerunit,startitnow-refertothepowerunittechnicalmanualforstartupprocedures.Listentopowerunitfor
amomenttoseeifthereareanyunusualmechanicalsounds(rubbing,grinding,excessivepumpnoise).Ifusingadieselunit,allow
sufficienttimefortheenginetoreachoperatingtemperaturebeforeincreasingengineRPM.Onceengineiswarm,graduallyincrease
engineRPMuntiloperatingspeedisreached.
23.
Ensurethatsupplypressureisatorabovethetong’sspecifiedoperatingpressure,andthatthereturnpressureisless
than350psi.
24.
Performavisualinspectionofpressurizedhydrauliclines.Ifanyhydraulicfittingsorhosesareleakingtheymustbe
repairedorreplacedbeforeproceeding.
25.
Rotatetongforoneminute,stop,andreversethedirectionofrotationforanotherminute,endingwiththeopeningof
therotarygearfacingthegeartrain.De-energizethepowerunit,andperformanothergenerouslubricationofthegear
train,includingthegearhousing.
26.
Energizepowerunit.Rotatetongforoneminute,stop,andreversethedirectionofrotationforanotherminute,ending
withtheopeningoftherotarygearfacingthegeartrain.
27.
De-energizethepowerunit,andperformathirdgenerouslubricationofthegeartrain,includingthegearhousing.
FAILURE TO ENSURE THAT THE SELF-SEALING SUPPLY AND RETURN LINES ARE FULLY
MADE UP MAY RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC EQUIPMENT FAILURE.
“SHORT” TURNBUCKLES HAVING PART NUMBER 101-3086 EMPLOY HIGH-STRENGTH PINS
WHICH MUST BE SUPPLIED BY FARR.
13.
Rotatethegeartrainbyhand,anduseaflashlighttoperformavisualinspectionofthegeartrainthroughtheaccess
panelandtheopeningoftherotarygearwhilethegeartrainisbeingrotated.Ifgeardamageorchipsofmetalare
seen,thetongshouldberemovedfromserviceandoverhauledtoavoidfurtherdamage.Replaceaccesspanelwhen
inspectioniscomplete.
14.
Inspectalljawsanddiesinuseforthemaintenanceinterval.Inspectthejawrollerpinsforsignsofdamage-replace
pinsifnecessary.Ifthepinsareweldedinplace,removeandquarantinethejawuntiltheweldisrepaired.Ensuredies
aresecureinthejaw-replaceworndiesifnecessary.Ensurethatthejawrollersrotatefreely.
15.
Inspectbackingpin(s).Ifcracked,broken,orbentit(they)mustbereplaced.
16.
Inspecttopandbottombrakebandlinings-replaceifnecessary.Unequalwearofthebrakebandsindicatesthatthe
brakebandtensionisnotevenlyadjusted.Refertothemaintenancesectionofthemanualforinstructionsonproperly
adjustingbrakebands.
17.
Inspectdoorsprings.Ensurethespringsretainsufficientstrengthtobeabletoassisttheopeningofthedoor,andto
keepthedooropen.Thespringsshouldalsohelpto“snap”thedoorshut.
18.
Inspectbackupsprings(ifapplicable).Therearextensionspringsshouldbeequallyextended,andthefrontlegsprings
should be equally compressed. Ensure that neither ofthe rear backupsprings have beenover-extended and lack
sufficienttensiontoadequatelysupportthebackup.Ensurethatneitherofthefrontlegspringshavebeenover-com-
pressed,andstillretainenoughspringstrengthtosupportthefrontofthebackup.
19.
Extendallhydrauliccylinders,andinspectcylinderrodsforsignsofmechanicaldamage,flaking,orrust.Farrrecom-
mendsthatdamagedcylindersbereplacedpriortostorage.
20.
Performavisualinspectionofallhydrauliclines.Replaceflexiblelinesiftheyappeartobecracked,fatigued,orhave
visiblesignsofwearfromcontactwitharigidobject.Ifyourtongisequippedwithrigidhydrauliclines,replaceanyline
thatisdentedorappearstobestressedorcracked.
21.
Generouslyfillthegeartrainhousingwithgreasethroughtheaccesspanel,andalsothroughtheopeningintherotary
gear.Performafulllubrication-refertoMaintenancesectionofmanualtodeterminelubricationpoints.
22.
Ensuremainsupplyandreturnconnectionstothetongarefullymadeup.Re-connecttheremainderofthehydraulic
lines,and,ifapplicable,theelectricallinetotheturnscounter.
