Re-energizepowerunitandextendallhydrauliccylinders.Inspectcylinderrodsforsignsofmechanicaldamage,flak-
ing,orrust.Farrrecommendsthatdamagedcylindersbereplaced.

Rotatetonginlowgearfor5minuteswhilemonitoringpressurizedsealsandhydrauliclines.Ifaseal,line,orfitting
beginstoleakwhiletongisrotating,itmustbereplacedbeforetheequipmentisreturnedtoservice.

Rotatetonginhighgearfor5minuteswhilemonitoringtemperatureoftopandbottombearingcaps.Ifthebearingcaps
arehottothetouch(higherthanapproximately50
o
C)replacetheapplicablebearings.Likewiseifthetongismaking
unusualnoisescheckfordamagedbearings(seeMaintenanceManualforallbearinglocations).

Installloadcell.Ifusingatensionloadcell,performavisualinspectionandreplaceanycracked,broken,ordistorted
componentsincludinglinksandchains.Ifusingacompressionloadcell,replaceanycomponentthathasbeencrushed
orotherwisedistortedthroughcompression.
32.
Ifapplicable,inspecttheloadcellanchorpins(tensionloadcellonly).Replacetheanchorpinsifcrackingormetal
distortionisseen.
33.
Ifapplicable,theweldsecuringthesingleloadcellanchortothebridgebarmainplatemustbeinspected(compression
loadcellonly).Iftheintegrityoftheweldhasbeencompromised,thetongmustberemovedfromserviceuntiltheweld
isrepaired.Theloadcellbeamwillneedtobedisconnectedandremovedsotheweldisvisible.Beforere-installingthe
beam,liberallygreasetheanchorpinbeforereinsertingintotheloadcellbeam.

Inspectloadcellfordamageorsignsofstress.Checkoillevelinloadcellandfillifnecessary(refertotechnicalmanual
Section7orSection8).
35.
Whilerotatingthecageplate,ensurethatthejawsproperlycam.Ifthejawsdonotcamproperly,thebrakebands
needtobetightened.IncrementallyadjustboththetopandbottombrakebandsEQUALLYuntilpropercamactionis
achieved.Refertothemaintenancesectionofthemanualforinstructionsonproperlyadjustingbrakebands.
36.
Performafullfunctionaltestofthetongincluding,ifapplicable,backupcomponents,liftcylinder,andfloatframecom-
ponents.Reportandcorrectanyhydraulicleaksfromthehydraulicvalvebank,orfromanyhydrauliccylindersthat
areused.
37.
Testsafetydoorfeature(ifequipped).Beginrotatingthetongatlowspeed,andopenthetongdoor(s).Ifrotationdoes
notimmediatelystop,thisisanindicationthatthesafetydoormechanismisnotoperatingcorrectlyandthetongmust
beremovedfromserviceuntilthemechanismisrepaired.Repeatthetestwhileoperatingthetongintheoppositedirec-
tion.Ifthesafetydoorisoperatingcorrectly,cageplaterotationwillnotbeinhibitedoncethedoorisclosedandlatched.

Farrrecommendsthat ananti-corrosiveagentsuchasTectyl®506beappliedtoallexternalunpaintedsurfaces
(andchainslings)EXCEPTcylinderrods,jawrollers,androtarygearcammingsurfaces.Refertomanufacturerdata
sheetsforproperapplicationandsafetyinformation.
Once all of the above maintenance checklist items have been satisfactorily completed the tool may
be returned to service.
