GPRS GPRS stands for "General Packet Radio Service". GPRS is a data transfer technology
which is based on the Internet protocol (IP) for GSM mobile phone networks.
While conventional GSM networks reach transfer speeds of not more than 9.6 Kbps (kilo-
bits per second), speeds of well over 100 Kbps are theoretically possible with GPRS.
Speeds of 40 Kbps are currently achieved in practice.
HSDPA HSDPA stands for "High Speed Downlink Packet Access" and should allow data rates of
up to 14.6 Mbps, for rapid transmission of large quantities of data between a base station
and a mobile device.
IP address The IP address is the Internet protocol address for a computer that is connected to the In-
ternet.
ISDN ISDN stands for "Integrated Services Digital Network" and is a digital communications net-
work for the transfer of data, text, speech and images over telephone lines. An ISDN basic
connection consists of two data channels (B-channels) and a control channel.
LAN LAN means "Local Area Network" and is a local communication network within a relatively
small geographical area, consisting of the following components:
- one or more servers
- workstations
- network operating system
- standard protocol
- special cables for communication
PIN PIN stands for "Personal Identification number". A PIN is a secret number used with a SIM,
credit, Eurocheque or cash card to identify the card holder.
Point-to-Point
Protocol
The Point-to-Point Protocol or PPP is a data transfer protocol used on the Internet to con-
nect modems.
PPPoE PPPoE refers to use of the Point-to-Point protocol (PPP) over an Ethernet connection. PP-
PoE is often a prerequisite for operation of an ADSL connection.
PPTP PPTP stands for "Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol". PPTP is a network protocol used for
ADSL access.
Protocol A protocol contains standards for controlled data transfer. Protocols define, for example,
the data structure, the structure of data packages and the coding. Common protocols in-
clude, for example: HTTP, IP, POP, PPP, SMTP, TCP/IP.
