BRAKE SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING (CONTINUED)
PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE CORRECTION
Brakes
Drag
Parking brake adjust. too tight. Adjust properly.
Clogged hose or line. Clean or replace.
Master cylinder reservoir cap
vent clogged.
Open vent in cap.
Brake pedal not fully releasing. Adjust pedal release.
󰀩 Adjust pedal free travel.
Brakes adjusted too tight. Adjust correctly.
Brakes not centered on drum. Center shoes.
Master cylinder or wheel
cylinder cups soft and sticky.
Repair or replace cylinders. Flush
system. Adjust bearings.
Loose wheel bearing. Adjust, 3-1-1.5.5.
Parking brake fails to release. Clean and lubricate parking brake
linkage.
Shoe retracting springs weak
or broken.
Replace springs.
Out-of-round drum. Turn drums.
Defective power booster. Repair or replace booster.
Seized caliper piston(s). Repair or replace caliper.
Thin rotor. Replace rotor.
Loose caliper bolts. Tighten to proper torque specs
Brakes
Chatter
Weak or broken shoe
retracting springs.
Replace springs.
Loose backing plate. Tighten fasteners.
Loose or damaged wheel
bearings.
Adjust or replace bearings
Drums tapered or
barrel-shaped.
Turn drum in pairs, or replace.
Bent shoes. Replace.
Dust on lining or lining glazed. Sand with medium grit sandpaper
and clean.
Drum damper spring missing. Install damper spring.
 Replace shoe and lining
assembly.
Shoes not adjusted properly. Center and adjust shoes.
Incorrect pads. Install correct pads.
Damaged pads. Replace pads.
