halfshaft, withdraw the halfshaft from the axle
tube
as
shown in
Figure
5.

Remove hub key and press
off
halfshaft
bearing and remove oil
seal
from housing.
Note
: The oil seal collar behind the bearing
should
not
be disturbed.
If
it
is accidentally
removed,
it
must be reset
with
a 73·
91
mm
(2
·
91
in) clearance from the outside face
of
the
collar to the end
of
the halfshaft taper.
If
on removing the hub, the hub key came
with
it
,
it
should
be
driven
out
with
a suitable drift.

Repeat the above operations
for
the L.H.
side.

oil
seal
into
the axle end housing.

Locate the new bearing on halfshaft and
pack
with
the recommended grease (see
lubrication chart).

Insert the R.H. halfshaft into the axle tube to
engage
in
the differential unit. Then, using the
slide hammer tool No.
3072
and adaptor
R.T.
3072-2
, refit the R.H. halfshaft.

Secure the brake back plate assembly to
axle end
with
four
,\
UNF set screws and
lockwashers.

Clean the halfshaft taper
of
all grease and
foreign matter.

If
the wheel
hub
studs have been damaged
they
should be pressed
out
and
new
ones fitted.

Position the
hub
key in its location on the
halfshaft and
fit
the wheel
hub
.

Secure the wheel hub to halfshaft
with
i
UN F
nut
and washer, tightening to a torque
of
12·44- 13·82kgm
(90
- 1
OOib
ft).

Check that the brake drum face
of
the hub
·is clean,
fit
drum and secure
with
~
UN F
counter sunk screw, and readjust brakes.

Reconnect the hydraulic brake pipes at
brake back
plate and bleed brakes. (If the
vehicle is on stands, leave this operation until
last).
23 Repeat operations for L.H. side.

Fit rear road wheels. Remove stands and
jack
down
the vehicle.
if
applicable.
25 Top
up
rear axle
with
the recommended
oil.

ntling rear axle
1 Following the same procedure
as
previously
described, remove the
axle
unit
from the
vehicle.
2 Place the axle
unit
in a vice
with
the spring
mountings uppermost and pinion
flange facing
the operative.
3 Remove the R.H. brake drum and hub (see
halfshaft bearing replacement).
4 Remove the R.H. brake backing
plate and
brake
assembly, and R.H. axle halfshaft. (See
halfshaft
bearing replacement).
5 Remove the R.H.
axle housing and
withdraw
the differential unit.
