On the above range
of
Robin 850 vehicles a
modified upper inner steering column was
fitted. The modified column has a
splined
lower
end
which
connects,to the steering box
inner column and
worm
using a flexible
coupling. A pinch
bolt
and nut secures the
flexible coupling
to
the splined end
of
the
upper inner column and steering box inner
column and worm.
Also on
the
above range
of
vehicles,
to
facilitate
the
fitting
of
the flexible coupling,
the rubber gaiter through
which
the steering
column passes was fitted the opposite
way
round
to
locate in its footwall position from
underneath the vehicle.
Steering box and column·
To
remove
(Figure
1)
1
following
instructions in the existing
Robin workshop
manual, remove the steering
wheel crash pad, steering wheel,
multi-switch
cover and clamp, multi-switch, indicator cam,
outer steering column clamping bracket and
the outer column from its support bracket
secured
to
the body.
2 Remove
the-fa
UNF pinch
bolt
and binx
nut
securing the flexible coupling
to
the
splined end
of
the upper inner column and
withdraw
the
upper column and outer
column
into
the vehicle interior:
3 Remove the

UNF pinch bolt and binx
nut
·securing the flexible coupling
to
the
steering
box
innercolumn
and worm.
4 From underneath the vehicle remove the
steering column gaiter from its body
location
in the footwell. ·
5 Remove i UNF self-locking
nut
and plain
washer and disconnect track rod from drop
arm.
6 Remove three i UNF set screws and
washers
to
remove the steering box from its
chassis
mo~nting
bracket.
To
replace
Replace in reverse order.
Steering
(from chassis No. 6E2/12208749)
On all Robin 850 veliicles
from
the above
chassis number a
'double universal
joint'
steering column arrangement was introduced.
This arrangement incorporates
an
additional
lower steering column connecting the upper
inner column
to
the steering box inner
column and worm. The
new
lower steering
column has universal joints at each end.
A
-fa
UNF pinch
bolt
and self-locking
nut
secures each universal
joint
to
the splined
ends
of
the inner upper column and steering
box inner column and worm.
To
remove

the-fa

the lower column
to
the splined end
of
the
inner upper column and
withdraw
the inner
upper column and outer column into the
vehicle interior.

UNF pinch
bolt
and self-
lockin,g
nut
securing the lower universal
joint
of
the lower column,
to
the splined end
of
the
steering box inner column and worm.
4 From underneath the vehicle remove the
steering box column gaiter from its body
location in the
footwell.
5 Unscrew a single i UNF
self-bcking
nut
and
plain washer
to
disconnect the track rod
from the drop arm.
6 Unscrew three i UNF set screws and.
washers and remove the steering box from
its chassis mounting bracket.
To
replace
1 Replace in reverse order.
Note:
A
wider
range
of
components for the
steering box, e.g. rocker shaft,
follower peg,
worm, etc., are
now
available
as
serviceable
items. (See Parts List 'R' Part No.
91364-
Section
01
).
