The
gearbox

Routine maintenance
The recommended service interval for checking
and topping up the gearbox oil level on the
Robin
850
is every 6,000 miles
(1
O,OOOkm).
Gearbox removal and installation
To
remove
Follow the same procedure
as
for removing a
gearbox fitted
to
a Robin
with
a
750cc
engine,
but note the following additional operation:
When removing the Robin
850
gearbox,
remove
two
lockwashers and nuts securing
the manifold adaptor
to
the
two
fixing studs
on the inlet manifold and remove adaptor
complete
with
carburettor. This
will
allow
the
engine/gearbox assembly
to
be
lowered
sufficient
to
clear the engine bulkhead and so
enable the gearbox
rear
support to clear the
chassis mounting.
Note:
On
the Robin 850 the gearbox support
bracket is secured
to
the chassis mounting
bracket by three set screws and self-locking
nuts.
Mainshaft
assembly
When removing
3rd/4th
synchro body and
1st/2nd
synchro body from the mainshaft
use press tool No.
RT
8778.
Primary gear assembly
To
dismantle
1
1 Prise the primary gear front
seal
from the
gear shaft.
2 Using circlip pliers and general tool
No.
7066, remove circlip securing the front
bearing to the primary gear.
3 Remove the spacer and front bearing
from the primary gear.
4 Withdraw the needle roller bearing from
inside the
primary gear body. ·

Note:
This bearing may have been removed
with
the mainshaft assembly.
5 Inspect front bearing and needle roller
bearing for wear, renewing
if
necessary.
To
reassemble
Replace components in
reverse
order.
Care should be taken when replacing the front
oil
seal
that
it
is not damaged when passing
the seal over the primary gear shaft splines.
The
seal
is correctly positioned when
it
abuts the shoulder on which the circlip
securing the front bearing
to
the primary gear
is located.
It
must
not
abut the circlip.
Note:
The 'lip'
of
the front seal must face
forward.
Rear cover assembly
To
dismantle
1 Remove circlip securing the
rear
bearing in
the rear cover.
2 Using tool No.
RT
7490, press out the
rear
bearing and speedo driving gear.
3 Prise
out
the rear cover oil
seal
taking
care
not
to
damage its seating.
To
reassemble
1
Press
new oil
seal
into the
rear
cover using
tool No.
RT
7489 and drive handle, part
No. 550.

Check rear bearing and speedo driving
gear-for wear, renewing
if
necessary.
3 Replace the bearing, circlip, speedo drive
gear and
finally
fit
the coupling flange oil
seal.
