17. Q: Can I receive attachments with email?
A: Yes, it is possible to receive GIF, JPG and BMP pictures (no larger than 300k). These will
be displayed at the bottom of your received email. Simple WAV sound attachments can
also be received. If you’ve added CopyMail (to copy all your email to a PC) then
attachments which won’t open on the e-mailer may be viewed/played on the PC instead.
18. Q: What does a large question mark on my received email mean?
A: The sender is trying to send you an attachment that cannot be displayed on the e-m@iler.
Ask the sender to send it again as a simple text-only file. Some email services send the
message itself, as well as an attachment containing the very same message. Therefore, if
a received message seems to be complete but is accompanied by a question mark, you
may ignore the question mark.
19. Q: I keep receiving 'junk email' – why is this?
A: Junk email (known as 'spam') is becoming an ever-greater nuisance these days. The
majority of it is sent as an attachment and so appears as a large question mark on the
screen. Note that spam is unauthorised and has nothing to do with Amstrad/Amserve.
Spam is sent by various e-marketing companies, and to help avoid spam do not give out
your email address to any unknown or un-trusted parties. If you do receive spam, never
reply to it – even if the message contains an 'unsubscribe' option or address. Replying to
spam will alert the company that they have contacted a valid email address, after which
they will send you even more spam.
20. Q: I have received a message from the 'Postmaster' – what does this mean?
A: This indicates that the email address in a message you sent was incorrect. To resend the
message with the correct address, press READ and select your original message, then
press
R FORWARD on the keyboard. Your message will be displayed with the To: box
empty – type in the correct email address and press EMAIL to resend.
21. Q: The display is showing MEMORY LOW. What shall I do?
A: Delete any old email or VoiceMail messages you no longer require. Note, until you do
this, email and VoiceMail will not work.
22. Q: Can I receive fax messages?
A: No.
23. Q: Can I print messages and web pages?
A: Yes. You need to purchase and connect a printer. You can check for printer availability on
the SERVICES menu – look under ONLINE LINKS / AMSERVE LINKS. Note that
messages (email/text/fax) can be printed only after they’ve been sent or received – not
while they’re being composed.
24. Q: How much does it cost to surf the internet?
A: You can check the surfing charge on the SERVICES menu – look under
ONLINE LINKS / AMSERVE LINKS
