4.15 Checking Ground Resistance at the Optical/Tributary
Shelf Power Input
Ideally, frame ground and battery return at the shelf power input connectors are common to
each other. Essentially a resistance of 0 ohms should be present between them and little or no
voltage potential across frame ground and battery return.
The test equipment required is a DMM or a voltmeter and ohmmeter that can accurately
detect low resistance levels. See Figure 4-50 [p. 4-75].
1 Use the DMM set to the voltmeter function or a voltmeter to measure the voltage between
frame ground and each of the battery return points. The reading should be very close to 0 V
DC.
2 Does the voltage exceed 1 V DC?
If YES:
Do not continue with Step 3 [p. 4-76] until the voltage source has been eliminated. For
technical assistance, call 1-800-USE-FTAC (800-873-3822).
If NO:
Continue with Step 3 [p. 4-76].
